Good advice about not composting walnut leaves. You also don't want to compost the walnut hulls.
  • favored1 Mar 2, 2012 @ 8:33 pm | delete
Somewhere in between I think. I only found out about the walnut tree thing a few years ago, but never had any so I wasn't an issue. I was given a bunch of bulbs last fall and stored them nicely so they began to sprout ok, but they may not get any blooms this year. We'll see. Thanks for the info on fertilizing.

I'm a beginner so I appreciate your tips for growing daffodils. I've always enjoyed seeing them bloom as a sign of spring.
  • CountrySunshine Feb 28, 2012 @ 2:56 pm | delete
I planted my first daffodils last fall, and they have just begun to bloom. I didn't know anything about growing them, but saw them on sale at the garden center, and thought "why not?" A lot of good tips here, and I'll keep them handy for future reference. Thanks for the tips!

Daffodils are spring favorites and I admired them since I was a little girl. The nice thing about daffodils is that they are pretty much maintenance-free after the initial planting and they bloom and bloom more, year after year. Beautiful lens, great tips!! :)

The daffodils look beautiful and you did a great job explaining how to nurture them and make them grow!

Yes! I grew up in northern states and found them easy to grow. I haven't tried it since moving to Florida; now I learned the best time and vareties to plant in the Gulf coast.
  • MelonyVaughan Feb 26, 2012 @ 8:53 pm | delete
I've always purchased them full-grown in pots and enjoyed their beauty. My father-in-law grows them in the front yard and they are actually very low maintenance. Your lens has a lot of valuable information. Thanks!

I find Daffodils is really a very beautiful flower. I have a pot of Daffodils in my garden.

Yes, I love Wordsworth's poem, too. We had dafs in the yard when I was growing up. An aunt gave one of my sisters daffodil bulbs for her 60 years ago, and I have the descendents of a lot of those bulbs in my yard now.
  • JoeCinocca Nov 19, 2011 @ 4:59 pm | delete
Great tips for me because my entire yard is red clay and the winters/summers here are pretty harsh. Thanks for the great tips!
  • Graceonline Nov 6, 2011 @ 10:20 pm | delete
I've been a fan of daffodils since I heard Wordsworth's poem as a child, and yes, when I had a garden, I grew them. I have also been fortunate to live where others before me planted daffodils, and so enjoyed their beauty spring after spring with little effort. She who plants daffodils, like she who plants a tree, leaves a lasting legacy.

    Lovely lens. Angel blessed.

Daffodils are my favorite spring flower...I used to grow them every year. For the past several years I must enjoy them in the store or florist, because due to health conditions I can no longer garden. But I sure had some beauties when I did. I love the thoroughness of your information here and thank you for sharing!

Daffodils are one of my favorite springtime flowers. Here in Vermont they often come up with snow still on the ground. Every couple of years We dig up the bulbs and transplant half of them to a new area. By doing that, soon you will have a riot of color all around your house.

    Chef, Are daffodils edible?

I have grown Daffodils before, and love to watch them bloom. They are one of the joys of Spring, watching the Daffodils come up all over England.

Nice lens. I have a lot of daffodils wandering through my garden. My mom used to buy those tiny ones and once they had finished their bloom, she would give them to me and I put them in the garden and most of the time they popped up the next spring.

I think just about everyone loves seeing those first daffodils after the long winter. I'm sure your Canadian winter is much longer than mine in Alabama although we had a record low temp of 14 degrees Farenheit this morning! (I know you're probably giggling at me now.LOL!) Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm honored. I'm hoping Squidoo will help me with the becoming accomplished part. I used to be a journalist in another life and I'm "getting back on the horse" so to speak, after a long time away.
