Growing Grape Vines

Growing grape vines in order to make wine is an activity which has been carried out throughout history all over the world. And today many amateurs are growing grape vines (link) in their own backyards.

How do you go about cultivating grapes which will be suitable for wine making? You need to know which grapes will thrive best in the conditions both of your soil and the local climate. There are many grape varieties and you can choose between the traditional European grapes and hybrid varieties, which have been bred to withstand harsher climates and are also more resistant to disease.

It is important to ensure that the soil quality, rainfall and levels of sunshine are all suitable for grape growing as these will affect the success of your efforts and ultimately the quality of your wine. Some of the nutrients needed for successful grape growing are boron, potassium, iron phosphorus, zinc and nitrogen. In addition, you'll need to use fertilizer, either chemical or organic, according to your preference.

Grapes must have lots of sun and good drainage - this is the reason vineyards are frequently planted on slopes. The vines also need plenty of room to grow and so it is important not to planted them too close to each other.

Vineyards usually need to have a trellis system in order to support the vines. This means that you can grow your grapes in an area which is a lot smaller than mightyou might have though. This means that you may be able to consider growing grapes in your own garden or back yard.

If you are growing hybrid grapes, you are going to find that they are highly acidic. Therefore they will need to have the level of acidity reduced before the yeast is added. You can buy the chemicals you need from any winemaking store. Next you have to add yeast to the wine, after which it needs to ferment for around a week. The type of yeast you use will depend on the flavour and charistics you want in your wine.

When the fermentation process has been completed, the wine is ready to age, a process which can take from several months to a few years. When the wine is crystal clear, it is ready to be bottled and then it must sit for another few months to continue ageing process As you know, the longer the wine ages, the better it tastes. So you will need to exercise patience, but your wine appreciation will probably be much greater as a result and over time you will develop your skills as a winemaker.

So instead, theystart out by using healthy rootstocks. then they graft vines onto them, which helps control the growth of the grapevine. So, whilst the vine which appears above the ground is that of the type of grape being produced, the roots may belong to a completely different species.
