Why Grow Tomatoes in Pots?

While many people grow tomatoes in the ground dirt of their gardens, others prefer growing tomatoes in pots. The reason for this is that people living in apartments or smaller space dwellings may have restrictions on how the yard is used or they may not have a yard at all. With these methods you can still plant, grow, harvest and enjoy wonderful tomato crops!

Selecting a Tomato plant's container:

When selecting the best pot or container to put your tomato plants in, several considerations come to mind.

1) Type of container - You can use regular flower pots, buckets, bushel baskets, wire baskets, pails, washtubs or all sorts of other things. Use your imagination if you don't have a traditional flower or gardening pot around.

2) Water drainage - Make sure whichever type of container you use has adequate holes either in the pot's base or bottom, to allow extra water to drain out. Otherwise, you will flood and destroy your tomato plants when they are watered.

3) Color & Size - Try to stay away from using pots or containers that are dark colors, which will absorb heat more, and potentially damage the plant roots.

As for size, it's recommended you use a 5 gallon container for each tomato plant. Some sources say a 2 gallon container is also adequate if the plant is given plenty of attention.
