The DS Version on this surely brilliant series!!!

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars (released on 17th March 2009) is the thirteenth game in the series. Created by Rockstar this game sets place in the well known Liberty City.

The game itself has aerial gameplay style as used in the older GTA games such as GTA 1 and 2. But this time the game has 3D elements added into the map. With the chance to walk, drive and swim the game really does offer so much and uses the DS full capabilities to provide yet another brilliant game!!!

GTA Chinatown Wars offers so much more than any other DS game. Not only does it have a full size Liberty City map but the map is packed with tons of cars including Go Karts, Sports cars, vans, limos and even tanks!!! As well as that there is the option to swim or use a boat to cross the water.

And what would GTA be with the vast amount of weapons that can be used to fight your way through the game. These include pistols, machine guns, flame throwers, rocker launchers, swords, grenades and a load more!!!!

True to the Nintendo DS there are mini games that fit in nicely with the manic GTA action that you should expect. These include hot wiring cars, drug deals, tattooing for extra money, scratch cards and many more.

The game itself would take around 12-15 hours to complete if you played through every mission straight away. But its practically impossible to do this because there's so much to do. There are side missions, unlockables and not to mention the great fun you can have causing shear mayhem!!!!

With an average rating of around 9.3 out of 10 this is a must have game!!!!

Storyline

You play as Huang Lee who arrives in Liberty City with the family heirloom for his Uncle (a sword called Yu Jian which was won by his farther in a poker game). When landing Huang Lee is shot in the head by assassins who steal Yu Jian and kidnap Huang Lee. Expecting he is dead Huang Lee is dumped in the water.

Huang Lee finds his Uncle Wu "Kenny" Lee and tells him what has happened. His uncle tells Huang Lee that Yu Jian was meant to be a gift to Hsin Jaoming, the ageing Triad boss in Liberty City as a way to secure his position as the new Triad boss.

Huang Lee is contacted by a few other Triad leaders who also which to take over from Hsin Jaoming after his death. Huang Lee agrees to help them out while searching for the sword.

When approached by LCPD Detective Wade Heston Huang agrees to help him with his dirty work while Wade helps find the sword and Huang's fathers killer. Huang Lee is then trapped in-between all Triad leaders and finds himself completing tasks to help each Triad gain more power while still looking for Yu Jian and his fathers killer Huang.

Gameplay

Gameplay on Chinatown Wars is quite like the older versions in the series. The game is played from an aerial view and as always the surrounding city is bursting with life. As you play you'll go through days, nights and even rain.

As you explore the map you'll see police chances, helicopters flying overhead and more.

Police AI is brilliant and they will not stop at nothing to get you busted. As you go up the stars you'll see police cars, the FBI, helicopters and even tanks all coming to hunt you down. Chinatown Wars has a new way to get your wanted level down and is unique to the DS only. Instead of having to hide or find a star to get your wanted level down you can now also smash up the police cars. Quite similar to the Need for Speed games players can now hit a police car into a tree making it break down.

The more stars you have the more police cars you must take down before you wanted level goes down. The idea is really good and works well in the game. I'm sure the GTA series may carry on this in later games.

As well as completing missions for the main Triad leaders there are also side missions which you will randomly find on the streets. There are also street races you can take part in and of course rampage missions that are dotted around the map.

Drug dealing is also like a game in itself. Buying and selling drugs can make you a lot of money very quickly if you know where to go. You can open up your PDA and find who wants what and trade drugs at a higher price. You'll also receive emails from drug dealers giving you great deals or asking for drugs.

The PDA not only helps you become a drug dealing king put its also great to plot routes on the map using the GPS and ordering weapons off the online Ammu-Nation.

As the game progresses more and more weapons will be available to order and new games will be available such as street racing.

Minigames

The DS wouldn't be the same without the vast amount of touch screen games.

GTA Chinatown Wars cleverly integrates these minigames into Chinatown War's game play.

Mini games include:

- Hot wiring cars
- Breaking into enemy grounds
- Putting together a sniper rifle
- Tattooing people for extra money
- Drug dealing
- Making molotov's
- Searching through trash

The minigames don't last very long at all but bring a new feature into the GTA series that works quite well thanks the the DS's touchscreen. Some missions will need you to complete minigames in order to complete the mission.

As you walk around Liberty City you can search through the trash to find food or weapons to help you on your way to being a stronger better player.
