GTA 4 Info: Grand Theft Auto 4 Hits XBOX, PS3 and the PC
The next addition to the Grand Theft Auto game series, part IV, was announced on May 9th, 2006, with a teaser trailer release (official site @ Rockstar) on March 29, 2007. The game was originally planned for release on October 16, 2007 for the XBOX 360 and Playstation 3, simultaneously - and has been released on April 29, 2008. The PC release date of GTA 4 was originally November 18th, 2008, but has been pushed back to December 2, 2008.
Meet the Anti-Hero of GTA 4
In GTA 4: You're Niko Bellic, eastern European immigrant to Liberty City in search of the "American dream," only to be short-changed by false promises by your cousin Roman.Coming from a rough, war-torn life - Niko has an open mind to success, no matter what path that might involve. This time around it's not the 80s or the 90s, but the current day. Liberty City looks more amazing than ever. Mimicking modern day New York City, you'll be taken through amazing replications of the grime and grit of the biggest city in the world, as Niko goes through untold adventures through the crime ridden underground, inhabited by shifty characters, gang members, police and other interesting characters only a big city could birth.
Originally moving to Liberty City to work with his cousin Roman at an allegedly thriving taxi business, Niko soon after realizes quite the contrary. GTA 4 promises to have the most engrossing storyline of all time - with more surprises and plot twists than ever.

April 18, 2008: Opie & Anthony Show - Sneak Preview of GTA 4
On 4/18/08, NYC metro's Opie & Anthony radio show featured Rockstar Games representative Lazlow Jones, who gave fans a good hour's worth of sneak previews for Grand Theft Auto 4. Here's what he covered (Note: this review is from April 2008 - although many of the "unknown" points have been cleared up, everything will be left in-tact here for your reference!)- A new "drunkenness" feature alters Niko's inhibitions the more he drinks. It also is represented by screen blurring, and to a major extent - making controls very difficult to manipulate, especially when driving.
- A "motion blur" feature adds to realism, and kicks in when the camera view is jerked around.
- Fans of the Opie & Anthony radio show will be happy to know that Opie, Anthony, Jim, Steve and other radio show personalities will actually be in the game.
- Niko can use an online dating site to meet & set up a date.
- When driving - if you hit a solid object (like a wall) hard enough, your character will actually fly through the windshield, unlike in previous GTA games.
- Wounds (from bullets) will affect you and others depending on where they occur. So, if you're shot in the leg - you'll limp, and it will affect your movement. Other characters react to this as well.
- There are over 100 original radio commercials in-game. There's also an internet, and various newspapers you can read. The newspapers can be either liberal or conservative, and will cover the same story differently. Things you do in-game will appear in the newspaper, if they're newsworthy enough!
- When asked about the Grand Theft Auto 4 PC release, Lazlow had no comments and stated that there is no current information about it. All of the focus now is on XBOX and PS3.
- The XBOX version of GTA4 was explained to be superior to PS3. The first GTA 4 expansion pack for it is slated to be released late this summer, with new plots, missions and cutscenes.
- GTA4 was stated to have an "amazing co-op feature", but nothing else about it was mentioned.

What's New in GTA 4?
- The game's setting is said to take place in the present time period.
- GTA 4 will not have planes that the character can fly (there will be an airport, though), but pilotable helicopters are still included.
- GTA 4 for the XBOX 360 will have downloadable packets for additional game features, adding hours of gameplay (for a price?) The packets will not simply be typical "addon cars," but more along the lines of new missions.
- GTA 4 will use the RAGE gaming engine. The footage seen in the trailer is actual game footage. Player movement will now change, depending on the type of terrain or floor you're walking on - due to the fact that player movement is now controlled entirely through a physics engine, rather than a clipping path.
- The GTA 4 world map will be smaller than that of GTA: San Andreas. However, the city size will actually be larger than that of San Andreas, as will the number of buildings you can enter and things you can do. The Official Playstation 2 Magazine stated that it would take "at least an hour" to drive from one end of GTA4's city to the other.
- GTA4 will not feature any pointless areas or open spaces - all locations within the game map will have a purpose.
- The GTA 4 land area covers the 5 boroughs of NYC as well as New Jersey (all re-named, as usual).
- New animation types such as climbing are rumored to be added to GTA4. This will be applied to telephone polls and fire escapes, for example.
- Dating will make a return.
- Pedestrians appear to be more diverse, as heads, torsos and legs are interchanged (randomly?) to create a broader visual effect.
- Cell phones will be a handy tool in the game, and it is rumored that they will allow the character to use a variety of services such as a camera, phonebook, personal organizer, and voicemail. It seems to also be able to let the character call several individual contacts: a taxi driver, for one. You'll be able to call police, fire and EMS, too.
- A soundtrack will once again be in the game (per tradition of all GTA titles) and will include modern-themed tracks.
- There will be a multiplayer mode in GTA4, although it appears to be more of a "deathmatch" instead of a full fledged co-op. However, a form of co-op will also be included, but details have not been given to its extent, yet.
- Cars will no longer be universally-unlocked, with readily opened doors. Now, you'll have to use tactics (break window, hotwire) to break and enter a car. Also, you will be able to utilize cars' trunks. Cars no longer explode after being flipped over for several seconds. Vehicle collisions are much more involved and intelligent. Many cars will also have GPS navigation.
- Getting arrested is not as annoying as it used to be. You're no longer "shot on sight", regardless of what you did. Now, only upper star levels will warrant being shot at - lower levels will result in a foot chase and arrest. You can no longer evade arrests via the old "Pay N' Spray" shops - you'll have to get disguised and switch cars. Star levels are no longer "global", but "radial". Leave the radius to avoid being hunted.
- Unlike ever before, certain areas of background elements, like walls, can be destroyed.
GTA 4 Co-op / Deathmatch Features

There are 5 deathmatch modes in GTA 4:
- Team Deathmatch: 2-8 teams battle it out - whoever winds up with the most money as a collective team, wins.
- Team Mafiya Work: 2-8 teams have mafiya missions to complete. Whoever completes the most missions at the end is the winner. You can sabotage other teams' missions along the way!
- Team Car Jack City: 2-8 teams must find whatever cars their boss wants around the city, and return them to a drop off point in as good a condition as possible. Whoever winds up with the best turnout wins.
- Cops 'n Crooks: A maximum of 2 teams play: one as the cops, one as the crooks. The crooks must get their boss to safety to win - the cops must kill the boss to win. In another version, crooks must gather their members and flee to safety to win, and cops must kill all crooks to win.
- Turf War: Much like "capture the flag." Up to 2 teams can play at once, and all members of a team must be present at a designated spot to "claim" the territory, and battle their way to the next territory. A territory with an enemy gang member in its boundaries can't be claimed. The team with the most territories wins.
