Your job may be slightly different, but there's something called the 80/20 rule.

If you walk in any company, it's a safe bet that 20% of the salespeople make 80% of the commissions.

Your boss says, "You didn't talk to enough people. You didn't talk to the right people. You said the wrong things to the right people." (He's full of it.)

You can't say the right thing to the wrong people. And vice-versa.

Look, you're not an idiot. You didn't PLAN to fail. When you signed on, you had one thing in mind: "I CAN MAKE SOME MONEY HERE". So you took the training. Did what they told you. Failed anyway. Because they lied to you. What's worse, they made it look like your fault. You did everything they told you to do. It didn't work! But you're not stupid. What's the only other possible explanation? They lied.

They PLANNED for you to fail.

Think I'm kidding? Let me prove it to you. Ask any sales manager what the 80/20 rule is. Then, ask how YOU can be in the 20%.

If their answer is, "It's a numbers game, make more calls", RUN! Run like you stole something. Because what they just told you will hurt you.
Here's why:

Pretend you're a sales manager.
You have a goal to make a million dollars in sales. You figure you need 10 salespeople to make it happen. You know that 2 of those salespeople will make 80% of your goal. The other 8 will fight for a share of what's left. They'll probably quit, and you'll replace them with others who have no chance of success.
Because 80% of all the commissions will go to the top 2 salespeople.
But you need the other 8, or you have no hope of meeting your goal.

So you lie to them. You say, "Our average salesperson makes $50K per year.
"

True, if you add up all the commissions and divide them by the number of salespeople in the office. But you're not actually paying them that way. The top 2 guys are getting most of the money; the other 8 are selling blood so they can buy enough gas to drive around and get kicked in the nuts all day.

So sales managers lie.
They do it all the time.

They'll even introduce you to the heavy hitter in the office. "This is Joe. He's been with us for 5 years. He made over $100K last year. Our 'average' salesperson makes $50K.
