What is fabric protection and why do I need it for my car?

Fabric protection is a coating that penetrates into each fiber of your car upholstery. It forms an invisible barrier that protects against permanent damage resulting from debris (water, moisture, salt, dirt and various spills) and preserves the color, life and beauty of your carpet and upholstery. Upholstery treated with high quality, professional grade, fabric protection gives the vehicle owner time to clean spills before they become stains and protects against ultra violet discoloration, moisture absorption, mold and mildew.

Fabric protection is a valuable investment that no car owner should do without; especially in today's world. People spend more time in thier vehicles, therefore the vehicle becomes dirtier, is more vulnerable to spills and the measure of wear and tear will be greater. Fabric protection prevents pre-mature aging and inhibits the penetration of spills such as coffee, pop, water, tea, milk and juices without affecting the natural appearance or texture of the fiber.

Fabric protection helps to maintain the vehicle's appearance and aids in the resale value. An unprotected car interior will deteriorate quicker, be reduced in value, could lead to costly repairs and requires more frequent and thorough cleanings.

What is the best type of fabric protection for my car?

Water based fabric protection vs. Solvent Based fabric protection

Fabric protection is available in 2 forms; water based and solvent based.

A water based product is designed exclusively for water safe material.It propels soil, oil and water on both natural and synthetic fibers. Water based fabric protection is a DIY product. The reason for this is that it requires 24 hours to dry completely. This means that for a full day you can not sit or walk on the upholstery that it has been sprayed onto.

Solvent based fabric protection is designed to treat water sensitive materials. It provides the maximum protection against a variety of stains including both wet and dry soils, water and oil. Solvent based fabric protection products are professional grade chemicals that should only be applied by trained technicians. The majority of car dealerships and auto detail shops prefer this type of upholstery protection over water based because it dries quicker.

The comparative performance of 2 types of fabric protectors is equal when they are applied properly.
The performance of a fabric protector product can be measured by the following criteria:

* Soil Resistance - how well treated fabrics stay cleaner for longer periods of time
* Protection against stains
* Soil or stain release - this is how easily different types of stains and soiling are removed
* Water repellency

When purchasing upholstery protection it is alway wise to seek out a product that has a fluoropolymer or fluorocarbon like *Teflon. These chemicals help will provide the ultimate protection for your vehicle.

DIY Fabric Protection VS. Professional Application

Can I just buy fabric protection and do it myself or should I contract the services of a professional?

Most retail fabric protection products are water based and require a high heat curing process otherwise aqueous fluoropolymer treatments will never fully cure. Studies have shown that when the fabric protection is not fully cured the performance and durability is approx. 30% of what would be achieved at the factory.

Professionals use solvent based fabric protection because it cures fully in a short period of time and has better delivery to the fibers.

Fabric protection must also be applied to a vehicle that has been prepped for this application. Before the fabric protection can be applied the carpet or upholstery must be thoroughly cleaned. If the area is not cleaned properly the performance of the fabric protection will fail, this is because dirt interferes with the bond to the fiber. Therefore, all of the dirt, dust, oils, sweat, salt, body oils, debris and soap residuals must be removed prior to the application otherwise they will impede bonding and performance.

Some people may think that because a car is new it does not require shampooing to remove dirt - it does if you want the fabric protection to perform correctly. In addition, to shampooing the car upholstery will require 2 rinses to remove soap residue and suspended soils and then it will require a drying process.

Fabric protection adheres to dry carpets and upholstery better than when it is wet and requires less time to dry. Drying times can be affected by factors such as: material density,temperature,humidity and air circulation.

It is always recommended that you have a professional apply fabric protection. It may be cheaper to purchase a can yourself but the outcome is far less superior to that of professional grade.

Purchasing a fabric protection package

What types of businesses offer fabric protection packages for my car?

Fabric protection packages for your car can be purchased at car dealership and at professional auto detailing shops.

It must be noted that when you purchase any upgrade for your car whether it is accessories, window tint, paint, fabric, leather or vinyl protection you will be subject to a mark-up. Car dealers make large profits from these added services because they charge more than what the regular price would have been from the window tinter, automotive detailing shop, stereo shop....

Typically speaking the best applications, product and prices come from auto detailers. In fact this is where most car dealerships send the car to for these services. Very few dealership actually perform the work in-house.

When searching for automotive detailing shops who offer any kind of vehicle protection do your research to find out which ones are reputable. Most protection systems like paint, fabric, vinyl and leather are invisible this means that until something happens to that surface you won't know if it is there or not. It is sad to say but like every other business there are a few scam artists in the car detailing business too. Some lack the knowledge or training to apply the product correctly. Others have been known to take the clients money and never apply the product and then there are those sell vinyl, leather and paint protection but do nothing more than apply vinyl dressing or wax.
