Guerrilla Gardening Digs Into Cities Neglected Public Spaces

Guerrilla Gardeners Fight Neglect

Armed with shovels, rakes, and bags of compost, "Guerrilla Gardeners" attack neglected, overgrown, and weed infested public spaces.

Under the cover of night, they sneak into weedy areas and loosen the soil, add compost and plant low maintenance perennial and annual flowers. Add a shot of water and the covert activity is a success. Some areas are even planted with vegetables.

The gardeners get the job completed much sooner than cutting through all the red tape needed to get a permit to plant a marigold in an abandoned lot. Go figure. It saddens me that it takes "political gardening" to beautify a city.

When police stop and ask what the Guerrilla Gardeners are doing, they reply 'gardening'. Most continue on their way.

Check the net for Guerrilla Gardeners in your city. This global grass roots movement, no pun intended, is revitalizing empty and neglected spaces in our major U.S. Cities.

Happy Planting!
