    Hello

Im new to Squidoo but have been noticing loads of enticing polls on people lenses.

Caould you direct me to a link that explains my options please? Ideally Id like to set up a poll where people choose from one of 12 options and can leave a comment too.

Am I being too ambitious perhaps?
  • SquidooKimberly Mar 12, 2012 @ 4:47 pm | delete
Yes! You can use the Poll Module to do this. Look for it in the "add modules" section.

Ah glad I found this - I can go prune some of the spammy comments I've seen and accidentally let through (oops moments). I do allow links, if they are relevant, decent and obvious, but you do get some people trying it on.
  • Iain84 Jan 15, 2012 @ 6:36 am | delete
great lens. i've spent some time going through my lenses and updating comment settings this morning. i think it's important to be able to leave comments as this adds to the value of lenses and gives people an opportunity to leave feedback

Really good info here. One question I have is how people get colored graphics into their guestbook header. I can't see anywhere on the template allowing that.

  • poddys Mar 18, 2011 @ 3:42 pm | delete
Great tips on using the Guestbook module3 Kimberly. I find that it's easier to control spam if I set comments to be manually approved, and also to not be sent an email, since I log into Squidoo daily (multiple times) and just check the Comments Tab on the dashboard.

I also always turn off the ability for a commenter to use HTML, as they ought not to need this. They can enter a url if they want, but most times when someone does it's spam. I wish the default was set to disallow HTML in comments.

I do love the enhancements to the Guestbook, especially replies. It makes having a discussion much easier, and we all want our visitors to return.

Your default bio image will show on your guestbook posts. You can upload this in the Profile tab on your Dashboard.

  • EditorDave Oct 6, 2010 @ 10:08 pm | delete
Nice. I wish I had read this when I first started. I now restrict comments to Squidoo members only... and I approve them first before posting them. Before I did this, I had a lot of spammers just loading my lenses with non-relevant stuff. I've liked, favorited, thumbs-upped, and lensrolled your great lens! Congrats on a great job!
  • Spook Oct 2, 2010 @ 3:21 pm | delete

I think I need to expand how I use my guestbooks. So far I haven't used them for discussion, but it is a great idea.

Beep! Cute line. Always helpful to get a good review of something as important to a lens as a guestbook. Thanks for outlining all the 'ins and outs' of the guestbook module. I love seeing all my comments at once on my dashboard, especially when there is a comment for more than one lens. Nice way to review and easy to approve and post to the lens. Also like all the features.

Hi, Kimberly. I wanted to thank you for YOUR comment in one of my guestbooks today. It's been a great day for me here at Squidoo, and I thank you for making it so with the LOTD pick. It really feels like I've been validated, you know? And I must say, I'm definitely thankful for guestbooks! :)

    Sorry, this is not possible.
  • JaguarJulie Aug 24, 2009 @ 4:30 pm | delete
Wow, I surely love how we can share our guestbooks as modules! That is a very neat view of the comments for a lens. And, might I add, it is wonderful to have you on board the traveling squid. Thank you Kimberly!

Great advice on Guestbooks. I thought that it was "not nice" to not let everyone post a comment. But, after getting burned a couple of times by non Squidooers with some links to spammy product sites; I have changed to make it so I get to approve or decline them first.

In saying this though, I must also say that the majority of people leaving comments are more the good guys than the bad guys.

Another great Squidoo tips lens from you. Thanks and 5 comments earned.
  • Mickie_G May 29, 2009 @ 12:29 pm | delete
Great basics! I have forgotten to de-select "Right Away" a few times and have gotten "spammed".

I've always wondered about replying to a comment...if someone replies to a comment you make on their lens is there some sort of notification sent to you?

For example, if an angel blesses a lens, I try to send a thank you message via their "contact me" button but I've seen lots of lensmasters "reply" to a blessing right on the lens. How does the angel know you've thanked them?

Hi Kimberly, great lens! I just published a lens on "How to Avoid sending Duplicate Comments in a Guestbook" because no one ever answered my concern about this when I reported this...so maybe lensmasters can learn that they need not to approve all duplicate comments, just keep one ...am lensrolling this to my lens mentioned above...5*

Thanks, Kimberly, for this awesome advice on guestbook management, especially deleting unwanted messages in my case. I have favorited your site and remain your devoted fan!
  • dustytoes Jan 1, 2009 @ 2:07 pm | delete

I was wondering how to delete spam, now I know.
  • femkeshe Nov 10, 2008 @ 5:24 am | delete

  • Susan52 Nov 1, 2008 @ 9:54 am | delete
Wow, terrific lens, great explanations! I love the text-with-big-picture module here. I agree with johndilbeck below that most of the best lenses have a guestbook near the bottom of the lens (like this one), so hopefully those who don't will see this and feel more comfortable with using a guestbook. Thanks, Kimberly!

  • aj2008 Oct 26, 2008 @ 12:23 pm | delete
Nice, clear explanation. But if someone replies to a comment, do you get notified via email like you do if someone leaves a comment?
  • kiwisoutback Oct 24, 2008 @ 9:19 am | delete
I never think to use the "ban" option...I think I'll start using it on spammers. Great work!
  • johndilbeck Oct 24, 2008 @ 2:13 am | delete
This is a great explanation of using the Guestbook module on our lenses. I'd like to mention, that, although not required, most of the best lenses have a guestbook near the bottom of the lens. Act on your dream! JD
