Love the coaster office desk, but i dont think the other one is using in offices. the other one in like royal desk.
  • Aquablocks May 5, 2012 @ 3:28 am | delete
I liked the outdoor concept and the fish pillows. They got me thinking about my aquablocks. A well set guestroom shows how you value your guests and want the best for them. Its worth investing in.

If they are not allergic to flowers, I put rose petals on their pillow slips. If allergic I put chocolate mints. In the morning I set a carafe of coffee and Danishs or Croissants by their door when I hear them stirring. (They know this will be there for them if they have visited before.)

I use my parent's first bedroom furniture in my guest room and on the wall, I have the framed paper of where they paid $5 a month for a grand total of $287 in 1931. It is priceless to me. This room needs some perking up so I appreciate all these great tips on Designing a Guest Room. Thanks. I converted the playroom into my office when the kids were grown.

I also turn our guest room in to handy office. We have sleep overs maybe couple times a year. so it would be total waste of space if we wouldn't use it for something else too.
  • EdwardCarr Feb 10, 2012 @ 11:15 am | delete
These are great ideas on how to combine an office and a guest room. You're exactly right. Most people don't have the space to just have a guest room and an office separately. Thanks for all the great ideas on how to have both.

Very nice! Now that our kids have finally moved out, we've converted my son's old room into our "Blue-Hawaii Tropical Room" ... with blue walls, a futon couch/bed, a desk, an easyboy recliner chair, with a tan carpet. Accents include a bamboo ladder that holds extra towels and bankets for our guests, bedspread with a "tapa-cloth look" that matches the colors of the carpet and walls and other room accents, some carved tikis and tiki mugs from one of our Hawaiian vacations, some shells from a shell collection, and a framed photo/poster of a scene I captured when we were in Hawaii. The room also doubles as my "office" when I'm working from home. (It's like working from a "vacation home" -- and we have friends from Guam who enjoy that room when they visit us!) Congratulations on a Squidoo masterpiece!

I like the lovely computer hutch idea... it might even work now that I have a laptop to work on (if my computer room was being used by guests). Space is always a premium especially with an international marriage... when visitors arrive they usually stay an extended time. You've thought of everything to make a guest feel very welcome!

My son is going to major in industrial design - mostly because he is gifted in it, but also partially because I am so bad at anything related to design. I am currently reading as much as I can on this, because I want to learn more and make our house nicer. Thanks for the info.

  • WaynesWorld Dec 27, 2011 @ 10:37 pm | delete
My parents were always having overnite guests unexpectedly and planned. 5 kids and their spouses and grandchildren can really put a 3 bedroom house to the test but with the kids extra blankets and sleeping bags did the trick. A hide-a-bed sofa helped but remember Elain from Seinfeld? My parents had that same hideabed sofa with the bar in the back. ===
I heard one person that had a great idea, guest box filled with things guests might not have with them or might forget; toothpaste, toothbrush, make up remover and pads, etc. (That reminds me, sometimes I tell my buddies that I had two nuns in my bed... I was away at college and my parents put two nuns, that had slid into the ditch, up for the night.
    '''
    Great idea for a lens.

The way I see it, decorate a guest room like a hotel room. Some pleasant landscape or animal pictures, fresh pillows and comforters, a small desk, television, and bathroom essentials.
  • seedplanter Dec 3, 2011 @ 11:12 pm | delete
This is such a well-organized lens! I know it's a huge undertaking to create a space for guests that says "Welcome!" I really like your simple ideas (knowing that we don't all have lots of $$ these days), such as using a hanging shoe rack for toiletries, etc. What a good idea!

make sure that the room is properly ventilated or heated. a comfy bed, clean sheets and new pillows/cases (or newly washed) should be provided. then your guests will have a good night sleep. light some fragrant candles to neutralize the smell inside the room.

Fold up and hideaway desks are a great way to reduce space you are using if you only have limited office space. Some can look really smart too.

Great ideas here! I really like the alternative furniture for file storage - that's always a dead giveaway that your guest room is really a home office, to have an ugly old file cabinet stuck in a corner, and I always think that guests feel much more at home if they don't feel they're getting in the way of a room's primary purpose.
  • Close2Art Nov 4, 2011 @ 8:40 pm | delete
Great lens, it's good to have the options of larger or smaller desks depending on how much space you have to work with, blessed...:)rob

I travel alot and stay at some higher end hotels so I grab the toiletries and put those out for guests. I also find local chocolatiers or other local handmade goodies and package those up to leave on guest pillows as both a treat and a mimento of the visit.

Wonderful ideas for makiing a guest room really special. I think a little posy of fresh flowers or an attractive houseplant is a great addition to a guest room, and perhaps a little box of assorted sweets or chocolates, unless you know your guest is on a diet, maybe a bowl of fresh fruit would be a healthier option!
I love those fantastic Home Office cabinets!

Lots of wine . . ha. Actually I love those 'hide-away' work stations. We all need to shut down our computers and come back to the real world at some point. Out of sight is out of mind. A really good night's sleep is so worth it. Always (if you can) let guests sleep in. You know they will take a good hour or two to settle in. Thanks for sharing a great lens. Stay well, Rose

I live so far away from civilization that nobody ever visits!! We use our guestroom as a big closet. If anyone does visit (if they can find their way) they get to sleep on the sofa and snuggle up with my 2 cats! Hopefully it won't be long before we move into a "real" house in a "real" city with a "real" guestroom! Right now we live in an old lake house. I guess I could put someone up in the boathouse with the water moccasins. So much for southern hospitality here! ;-)
  • glamorous-glass Feb 22, 2011 @ 10:18 am | delete

Wow! You are truly the hostess with the mostess! Wonderful lens (Gee, when can we come to visit?! ... just kidding) You've given a bunch of ideas for converting one of our empty bedrooms (oh heck, why not three of them? -- the kids have made their way out of the house, so now we can start our "bed&breakfast" in the San Francisco area. *grin*). I've liked, favorited, thumbs-upped, and lensrolled your masterpiece! Congrats on a great job!

Thank you for this lens, I love the elegant tables that you have selected for a home office or guestroom. Most offices need a bit of a lift to make it a much more relaxing environment to work in.
  • javrsmith Nov 1, 2010 @ 11:25 am | delete
Very good points. My guest room needs a little work but my office needs a lot more. I've got visitors coming next week so your lens is very timely for me. Thanks!

I would like to see some ideas on offices that don't hide your PC in a piece of furniture. I spend a lot of time on my PC and i like the aesthetic it brings my office. I also need room to stretch my legs when i am burning the midnight oil. I just installed some louvered doors and upgraded my bookshelves. So there is a wood theme to the room. I'd be interested in seeing a modern twist on the classic wood furniture office space.

I'm loving the extra touches that you've provided for making up a guest room. The bathroom touches are especially nice. Of course, if you don't have the space I also like the idea of using an air mattress, these can be very comfortable, believe it or not.
  • daoine Sep 13, 2010 @ 6:57 am | delete
Thanks for these great tips. We have bookshelves in our guestroom which makes for plenty of extra space to put things. Sometimes guests don't like to open the cupboards even if they are mostly empty. An extra blanket is a must.
  • tandemonimom Sep 8, 2010 @ 6:07 pm | delete
Love the ideas for making a guest comfortable. I sometimes save (unused) hotel toiletries and put in a basket in the guest bathroom when we have visitors.
  • awelldressedbullet Sep 8, 2010 @ 4:08 pm | delete
My tip is not to make a guest room to nice, or they might stay LOL Just kidding, love the ideas!

    Thanks for the Idea

Adding a desk in a guest room is a great idea. I think guests like a place to use their laptop or have some " office space " for paperwork. Also, a desk can just be used to get things out of their suitcase.

Corner Office Computer Center is a cool idea!

  • thrivingmom Jul 21, 2010 @ 12:38 pm | delete
When I saw that your lens was about a guest room/office combo, I was expecting to see murphey beds so that the guest room part was hidden. I was really surprised to see hide away desks. I like the idea of hding the office instead of the guest room. Neat!
  • vallain Jul 9, 2010 @ 6:55 pm | delete
I really like the idea of a desk that closes up leaving a nice looking cabinet. We put a murphy bed in our guestroom which is my craft room the rest of the time.

One of the best ways to measure yor success when you are designing a guest room is for you to spend the night as a guest in your own house. Works every time!

Very nice lens, I love the file cabinets. That's very creative how to give the option to fold up when you're done. The guestroom/office idea was a great idea too seeing people are downsizing.

    Hey everyone,

I was just wondering if there are some people that are interested in things like Japanese lamps or lanterns, Chinese lamps or

lanterns, shoji doors and other Japanese interior design or garden items. I live in Japan now and these items have been become

very interesting to me, however my knowledge is limited and I'm sure there are people out there that could tell me things about

these subjects that I might not know yet. If you have a chance check out my Japanese Lamps blog.
