Imagine This Multi-Month Trip Within The United States!

Imagine You Are A Single Female Traveler. Imagine that you have never been to the USA, but you would like to travel extensively for a few months. How does the following itinerary sound?

Arrive  in Los Angeles - July 1

Met By A Woman Your Same Age. She shows you around town. The two of you have made arrangements for you to stay at her home for 3 days.

July 3

You have arranged to housesit a home in Los Angeles for 3 weeks - in exchange for taking care of the owners cat and flowers while they are our of town. That should give you enough time to go to Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Grauman's Chinese Theater, the beach, and all of the hot spots. (Plus you have made a friend to go places with)

July25th

You hop the train and go north to Portland, Oregon - where you meet another new friend. Portland is a city of great food and little pubs. You will have tons of fun and hate to leave when your 3 days are up.

July 28th

On the train again to Seattle where you have arranged to  pet sit for 7 days in a house right on the lake! Seattle public transportation will take you anywhere in town. Don't miss the waterfront and take the walk-on ferry to Bainbridge Island if you get a hankering for the country life.

Next stop - a plane to Bozeman Montana - your host will meet you at the airport and has offered a grand tour of Yellowstone National Park - be sure to bring your camera.

August and September - Jump on the train again down to Colorado Springs, Colorado - a fantastic ski area in the winter and great hiking in the summer - you could house sit here for an entire year, but you decide 2 months is a long enough stay. Even though you have a place to stay, meeting local people can be a challenge. But not for you! Just an email away is a dinner partner, a hiking buddy and a free tour guide. . .you can kick back and enjoy your extended visit.

You hop from town to town, meeting local people, staying for free. Your only costs are transportation, food and miscellaneous expenses. Ready made friends, eager to show you around are at each stop.

Does this type of travel appeal to you?

It's easier than you think.

What Kind Of People Really Do This?

* Caretakers. According to law enforcement and homeowners insurance company experts, an occupied home is far safer from vandals than one left unoccupied for extended period of times. Most guests do not mind taking in the mail and perhaps watering a few plants in return for the generous offer to stay in the home.

* Writers, photographers, visiting professors, and many others in freelance positions share hospitality arrangements when on assignment in other parts of the country or world.

* World travelers network constantly in seeking their next comfortable place to stay. Bartering for chores, small hosting fees and other arrangements are made with some advance planning.

Travelers In The Living Room!

The Benefits Are Far and Wide

Exchanging hospitality provides the means to swap ideas, build new friendships and gain insight into each other's worlds. Sharing in the preparation of meals (including shopping in local markets), dining with several generations of relatives, putting your foreign languages skills to use in a supportive environment, and being directed to the jewels of a region often overlooked in the guide books, are a few of the benefits of an exchange while your hosts remain during your stay. For many it may be simply a comfortable place to hang your hat for a bit while traveling around a region.

As in all exchanges, understanding the needs and expectations of one another will ensure a positive experience. Whether you will be traveling alone or with children, the amount of time to spent together, and the number of shared meals, are just several of the important issues for the host and guest to discuss prior to committing to the exchange.
