Ascalon is at war, fighting the Charr invading from the North. The fight is not going well but the Great Northern Wall protects Ascalon from the worst of the threat. However, the Charr find a way past the wall, and increase their attacks. It is in this setting the player begins a new character and completes initial training quests.

I'd love to tell you the whole story, but then it would ruin the storyline for you.

Professions:

Elementalist - Classic elemental spell casting class that uses fire, air, earth or water magic for damage and defense.
Mesmer - Manipulates opponents' actions against them and causes damage and confusion through illusions.
Monk - Heals and protects their allies and also smites their opponents with holy damage.
Necromancer - Casts curses on their opponents, utilises corpses of the dead and sacrifices their own health for damage.
Ranger - Ranged attacker utilizing bow, pets and traps. A ranger can summon spirits that affect large areas of the battlefield.
Warrior - Armored melee fighter using a weapon, strength and tactics to fight in the front line.

The story is only loosely linked to that of the original campaign, the original games NPC's being the most notable link. Cantha was also mentioned many times in the orginal game, most notibly in the storage agents.

Many centuries prior to the character's time, the Canthan Emperor's bodyguard, Shiro Tagachi, murders the Emperor after receiving an ominous omen from a fortune teller and calls great power to himself. The champions of the Luxon and Kurzick factions, Archemorus and Saint Viktor respectively, and Vizu, an assassin, are able to kill Shiro. However, before dying, Shiro gathered up all his malice, hatred and rage and his death wail triggered what became known as the Jade Wind, turning everything to stone within a hundred miles and turning the sea to jade. However, this was not the end, as Shiro has returned from the Underworld, using his powers as an Envoy to create an unholy army known as the Afflicted in a bid to regain his mortal form and rule Cantha.

New characters join the Shing Jea Monastery for training. During their training the initial impact of Shiro's attempts to return becomes apparent through the illness which is starting to travel through the islands inhabitants, turning them into the vile Afflicted. Once the danger is confirmed the players accompany Master Togo, a revered training master and half brother to the current Canthan emperor, on his travels to Kaineng City to warn and petition the Emperor for his assistance.

Professions:

Assassin- is a master taking down a single target at speed. They are able to stealthly shadow step to their target's location and use an attack system which enforces effective skill chaining.
Ritualist- uses bound spirits, weapon spells and ashes of the dead to do damage to enemies and protect themselves and their allies.

Character Slots: There is a total of 4 slots for Factions only. If you link Factions with Guild Wars (core) you get a total of 6.

Nightfall is set in the continent of Elona, a new area designed for the Nightfall campaign. Elona is a land of wealth and power and has three major provinces; Istan, Kourna and Vabbi. The provinces are at peace, but are anxious to keep that peace. The continent uses Africa as inspiration giving it a unique style compared to the Europe-inspired Prophecies and Asia-inspired Factions.

The Order of the Sunspears, abbreviated to the Sunspears, are an independent military order based on the island of Istan, they are tasked with protecting all of Elona from threat and have done so for many centuries. They are currently led by Spearmarshal Kormir, who is well respected and widely regarded as the best leader the Sunspears have had for some time.

The position of Warmarshal, the leader of Kourna, dates back to when the Turai Ossa defeated and imprisoned the undead Lord, Palawa Joko. The title has passed through Turai's descendants to the current Kournan ruler, Varesh Ossa.

The Nightfall campaign takes place in 1075AE/1535CC - five years after the Searing that destroyed the Kingdom of Ascalon across the Crystal Desert to the north of the Desolation, and two years after the twin events in the previous campaigns of the Undead Lich being slain on the Bloodstone atop the volcano of Abaddon's Mouth in Prophecies and Shiro Tagachi being sent to the Realm of Torment by the Envoys to pay for his crimes in Factions.

Professions:

Dervish-a sort of holy warrior, wields a scythe and uses many different enchantments to support themselves and damage their enemies. They have the ability to temporarily transform into the likeness, or form, of the Five Gods.

Paragon-wields a spear and acts as a battle commander. Heavily armored, they are an effective support character capable of helping teammates using shouts and chants affecting all nearby allies.

Guild Wars: Eye of the North is a future expansion pack to the Guild Wars series. It is scheduled to be released in the Holiday season of 2007. Unlike other games in the Guild Wars sequence, Eye of the North will require players to own one of the earlier three campaigns, which should make make the cost of buying it a bit less than the other three "chapters".

Eye of the North will feature no new professions, but will have 18 new "multilevel" dungeons, 150 new skills (50 of them disallowed in PvP), 40 new armor sets, and 10 new heroes, and numerous new items, weapons, and titles to attain. It is intended as a bridge from Guild Wars to Guild Wars 2, and will introduce the new races of Norn (dwellers on the icy slopes of the Shiverpeak Mountains to the north), Asuras (inhabitants of the western Maguuma Jungle) and Sylvari that will be playable in the sequel.
