Take it slow.....
The aim of this page is to provide links and information relating to stress, but more importantly, ways of dealing with it, relaxing and leading a calmer life.
Maybe you have trouble sleeping, or maybe aches and pains you don't know what to do about? Most GPs will listen, as much as they can in ten minutes, and offer some advice, but most of us have the ability to deal with stress ourselves - we just need pointing in the right direction! There is a whole range of complimentary therapies and exercise forms such as Chi Kung, which will help and most will be featured here at some stage, along with tips and strategies to maintain a healthier, calmer, more balanced life.

Meditation on the Move
breathe right, relieve stress
We can rectify this, by practicing breathing from the lower abdomen. Breathe deeply in through the nose, keeping the mouth shut. Feel the lower abdomen expand as your lungs fill completely up. Now hold your breath for 4 seconds, and then very slowly let your breath escape through your nose, whilst also concentrating on your whole body sinking down' and relaxing. It's a wonderful feeling!
Then focus on continuing to breathe in through the nose, deep down into your lower abdomen, and then breathing out through the nose, letting your body sink down' and relax. To keep focussed on this, say 'in' and 'out' to yourself, or count 1 and 2, on the in and out breaths. Ignore any clutter in your mind and go for that blank' feeling!
Practice this regularly, and in the following situations:
In the Car...
We all get tense when we drive. Don't grip the steering wheel too tightly, just lightly rest your hands, enough for control. If you know you're getting tense, focus on your breathing as above and let your body relax into the seat. Don't get caught up in any craziness around you! Keep your eyes open!
At Work....
If you spend a lot of time at your desk and computer, this will lead to upper body tension, as well as in the abdomen. Lightly rest your arms/hands on the desk and as above focus on your breathing and relax into your chair for as long as you are able. If possible close and relax your eyes. Take regular breaks.
Getting to Sleep.....
Many of us have difficulty dropping off, or wake up and then find it difficult getting back to sleep. When you want to sleep, lie on your back, hands by side, and focus on the breathing as above, sinking down into the bed and letting your mind go blank, with eyes closed.
On the Train/Tube.....
Sit comfortably in your seat, back straight, hands in lap, and just focus once more on the breathing as described above, letting yourself 'sink' into your seat. Eyes open or closed.
Let correct breathing become a habit, but one you won't want to break!
