Dear friends -

We can do nothing for this little dog other than to make sure that his death was not in vain and that this atrocity will not be allowed to happen again. Please sign the petition and forward it as widely as you can. For my friends who speak Spanish, please write your note in Spanish. Thank you. Theo

In 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, tied him to a rope in an art gallery, and allowed him to starve to death.

For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition watched the dog's agony, until eventually he died.

Does this look like art to you?

But this is not all... the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the 'installation' was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008.

PLEASE HELP STOP HIM.

Sign the petition.

It will only take 1 minute.

Work of a Costa Rican "Artist"

Petition overview | letter
Target:HIVOS (info@hivos.nl)Sponsored by: Maya Reyes

This is an invitation to boicot the the work of a costa rican artist. This artist commited an act of torture that has no place in this supposedly "civilized" world nor in art.

In 2007, Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, a so called artist, took an abandoned dog from the streets, tied him to a very short rope to a wall in an art gallery and left him there to slowly die of hunger and thrist.

Blog 1

During several days, the author of such cruelty and the visitors of the gallery of art watched the agony of this animal. Until the dog finally died of famine, surely after a painful, absurd and incomprehensible torture.

Sickening?
Well that's not all: the prestigious Centralamerican Biennial of Art decided, incomprehensibly, that this horrible act commited by this guy was art, and Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel actions in said biennial on 2008.

LET'S PREVENT IT!!

Thanks!!

Maya Reyes

¡¡Gracias!!

Don't Let My Death be In Vain

This is a statement from the 'Artist'

Someone claiming to be the "Artist"...

This is a statement from the 'artist'

Hello everyone. My name is Guillermo Habacuc Vargas. I am 50 years old and an artist. Recently, I have been critisized for my work titled "Eres lo que lees", which features a dog named Nativity. The purpose of the work was not to cause any type of infliction on the poor, innocent creature, but rather to illustrate a point. In my home city of San Jose, Costa Rica, tens of thousands of stray dogs starve and die of illness each year in the streets and no one pays them a second thought.

Now, if you publicly display one of these starving creatures, such as the case with Nativity, it creates a backlash that brings out a big of hypocrisy in all of us. Nativity was a very sick creature and would have died in the streets anyway.

Animals are defenseless creatures and should not be used as objects for people to practice their talents on. Something needs to be done to protect these animals that love and trust humans. People need to realize that tattooing a pig is torture to the animal, and that chaining up a dog as a part of an exhibit is inhumane.

Hmmm.... not sure. I do know that the people who watched this are something. It is a horrible thing, but his statement makes it clear that this isn't art at all, but a political statement.

Now, I don't think it is a great political statement, as I doubt those watching this went out and did anything to prevent what would have happened to this dog anyway. So I am not sure that I totally agree with your point, even though you do have a good point.

Your work on this lens and your presentation are excellent. ***** and please note that I am not in favor of what the guy is doing, I just don't think he did it for art.

I have no sympathy for the sick can't say the word you know what I mean. I have 3 dogs and a cat . If I ever saw him on the street I would rip his heart out. You have to be sick in the head to think this crap is art. If it was up to me I would bring back public hangings and he would be first on my list. I hope noone gets offended by anything I am sying. I am speaking as an animal activist and someone who has worked with dogs and cats for over 3 yrs. Thank you for doing something about this atrocity. kylee

More Horrific "Art"

LONDON - Damien Hirst's gamble has paid off.

A sale of pickled sharks, butterfly paintings and other pieces by the provocative British artist has raised more than US$125 million - a record for an auction of works by a single artist. And there is more to come Tuesday.
