1. Tune your guitar:
   
   Tuning will give your guitar a better sound when you play and help you familiarize with the sound of each note. You should be able to memorize the name of each note "Every Body Gets Dinner At Eight" going from the bottom (High E) to the top (Low E).
   I would suggest you go to any guitar store nearby and purchase a tuner for guitar (usually around $10-$15) and that is if you've already have a guitar(if don't have a guitar yet, there are tons of cheap guitar for beginners on Ebay that you can buy). The tuner will help you identify the exact sound for each note and you can adjust the strings according to that.
2. Learn to Read Guitar Tabs: it is very important that you learn how to read Guitar Tablatures or Guitar tabs because it's the most convenient way to learn new songs

   The idea is to look at the tab in the same way you look at your guitar; each line corresponds to a string, and each number tells you which fret to hold down when plucking that string. Read more
3. Learn Basic Chords: before learning any song, you need to learn the basic chords; here are the basic guitar chords:
   
   These are the most common chords that you will find in a lot of songs. Practice and learn these chords as it is the first step to become a good guitar player.
4. Strum The Guitar: when you got your left hand in place (this is for right-handed person), you need to learn how to strum. Strumming consists of various downstroke and upstroke combinations. When you strum, try to make an action of sweeping your fingers through all the strings with even pressure and steady speed. The motion of strumming should be in the wrist not in the forearm.
5. Practice, Practice, Practice: practice playing your guitar as much as possible; while watching TV, or talking to people try to get your fingers familiar with the chords. PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. The best guitarists in the world are the people who work very very hard, some practice up to 9-10 hours a day
   When I first start playing, I practice around 2-3 hours a day and play my first song in the first week (Redemption Song - Bob Marley). Another important factor is that you should try your best to practice your guitar everyday (at least 30 minutes) rather than playing 3 hours one day and then stop for couple days.
   
   
6. Have fun: If you don't find it fun to do something, it's probably not for you. DONT stress yourself out, have fun playing guitar. You can have a lot of fun playing with another guitarist or friend who sings or play other instrument. Jamming together can be a great fun and it can incredibly improve your guitar skills in a short period of time. Joining or creating a band can be a lot of fun but this requires some skills from you first, maybe after six months or so.
