Why would I want to do guitar finger exercises?
Guitar Finger Exercise #1
4 notes per string

This first guitar finger exercise is very basic and probably the best one for beginners to start with. I still do this warm up every time I pick up my guitar. The video below shows me doing this starting on the fifth fret.
Starting on the 6th string, 5th fret with your 1st finger, then the 6th fret with your 2nd finger, then 7th fret with your 3rd finger, then the 8th fret with your 4th finger.
Now repeat this on the fifth string, then the fourth string and so on up to the first string and then back down again.
A couple of things to keep in mind when doing any guitar finger exercises is to do them as slow as you have to in order to maintain any even steady beat and make sure each note sounds clean. As you improve you should keep increasing the speed(tempo) at which you play it.
I do highly recommend using a metronome when practicing as this will greatly improve your sense of timing.
Another thing I would suggest to give your picking hand a good workout is to use alternating picking when doing these exercises. If you are not familiar with alternating picking this just means the first note you would play with a downstroke, the next note with an up stroke and keep alternating this way through out the exercise.

Guitar Finger Exercise #2
String Skipping

This second guitar finger exercise is a lot more challenging then the first but if you stick with it, it really is beneficial. The video below shows me doing this one starting on the fifth fret but you can play it anywhere on the fretboard. As with the first one, try to use an alternating picking pattern as this will enable you to play at increased speeds.

Final Thoughts On Guitar Finger Exercises
Try to devote at least 5 minutes at the beginning and end of all your practice sessions to some sort of guitar finger exercises and I'm sure you will be surprised at how much it helps all aspects of your guitar playing.
