My Say on the Matter
I'm about as impartial as you can get; I was very tempted to buy Rock Band when it first came out, living in the UK the game was always hideously overpriced however and this was therefore something that always put me off. Guitar Hero meanwhile; my brother owns a copy of one of the games in the series and I did briefly pick it up and play it for a while whilst visiting his home, found it a bit boring though and quickly reverted to playing Singstar shortly after. So my experience with both games had been limited/non-existent, when Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Band 2 came out however I just had to test them both out and try the games for myself.
I'm a drummer at heart, not a very good drummer, but a drummer nonetheless and the drumming aspect of these games is therefore something that was always going to be incredibly important to me. The drumkit you get with Guitar Hero World Tour is far greater than that which you get with Rock Band 2, it's of a far superior quality and a much better build too. With the World Tour kit the cymbals and drums are of a good build, and whilst the bass pedal isn't great; this is something that can be easily overlooked, particularly when comparing it to the standard supplied Rock Band 2 drum kit as the RB2 drum set is really very faulty in comparison. As the Guitar Hero World Tour drum kit is fully compatible with Rock Band 2; you can buy the complete Guitar Hero World Tour set up which comes with guitar, drum kit, and microphone, and then buy the Rock Band 2 game solus giving you full access to Rock Band's vast array of tracks whilst also giving you a better build quality with the instruments.
Both games are enjoyable, I definitely feel that the Guitar Hero World Tour drum kit is of a greater quality though so like I say; as the Guitar Hero World Tour instruments are fully compatible with Rock Band 2, what you can do is buy the Guitar Hero World Tour game with instruments included, and then if you also wish to own Rock Band 2 then just purchase RB 2 as a game on its own which will set you back $50-60 depending on which format you purchase the game in. Owning both games will give you an excellent selection of tracks to choose from, and as the Guitar Hero World Tour instruments are better (in my opinion) and both games can be played with these instruments; just purchase World Tour with instruments and avoid the agony of the problematic Rock Band 2 ones.

If you can afford it then Ion's Drum Rocker will enhance your Rock Band experience no end. I've previously gone on about how much better Guitar Hero World Tour's drumkit is than the standard supplied Rock Band 2 one; the Drum Rocker from Ion is second to none however, and if you can afford to shell out for this fine piece of kit then I'd most definitely recommend doing so.
It'll enhance your Rock Band drumming experience no end, it's a beautiful piece of kit, and whilst it won't work with Guitar Hero World Tour; it'll certainly make your drumming game a lot more fun for Rock Band 1 and 2.
This kit is superbly responsive, won't drop notes left, right, and centre, and will give you the rough feel of playing a real digital drum kit. It's good fun to play, and how hard you hit the drums will determine how loud the note is played (whilst playing Rock Band 2).
If you're a hardened Rock Band fan rather than a Guitar Hero World Tour convert then Ion's Drum Rocker is really a requirement if you're intending to do a lot of drumming. Whilst fun to play and incredibly responsive, the great thing about the Drum Rocker is that it'll also teach you to play drums far greater than any other kit for these games that is out there on the market. Once you've mastered the art of Rock Band drumming with the Ion Drum Rocker; you'll then find it incredibly easy to go out there and play the real thing.
Skills learned from playing Ion's Drum Rocker are fully transferable to a real drum kit, so Ion's Drum Rocker is an incredibly useful piece of equipment, and whilst it may seem quite expensive; it's fully worth the price for the quality of kit that you get here, the response of the drums, and its ability to teach you to play drums like a pro.

- I went with Rock Band 2 myself, it just seemed to be more suitable for the family. Guitar Hero World Tour seems more hard core (perhaps that is why the GH followers seem to be more aggressive with their posts!).
Also with Rock Band 2 you didn't have to unlock every song like you do in the Guitar Hero series. At least with the World Tour version you unlock sets now, but you still have to beat the sets to move forward.
I also put a review up for both of these games, so take a minute and check out my version and leave me a comment.
