Guitar Major Scale - What Is A Major Scale?

Before learning a guitar major scale let's explain what it is first. We have all heard the famous song (unfortunately) from The Sound Of Music movie, "Do(e), a deer, a female deer. Re (ray) a drop of golden sun..." Well, that is a major scale and it contains seven notes, do - re - mi - fa - so - la - ti "and it brings you back to do"

Enought of that! Here is a quick tip. NEVER try to play and sing that on the guitar. No one wants to hear it ever again so even if you want to learn How To Play Tabs and have that music in mind - forget it!

For many, learning how to play the guitar becomes a life long hobby and it all starts with a few basic lessons.

So, how do you about playing a guitar major scale?

Learn A Pattern 

There are lots of ways to play guitar major scales but here is one method that doesn't use any open strings. You'll see the advantage of that at the end.


The above pattern is that of a major scale on the guitar. The example shown is that of C major. Starting with a C on the 6th string at the 8th fret, we keep to the pattern shown, we will get all the notes of that scale, C D E F G A B C.

To start with just learn the pattern and start with your second finger on the C note on the 6th string. Practice it, up and down a few times to get the feel of it.

The good news is this. Knowing this pattern itself allows you to play a major scale from any starting note on the 6th string. Just move your hand up or down a fret and play it again. Same pattern - different scale!

Have a go playing the pattern all the way up and down the fretboard. It comes as a bit shock to many people just how easy it is to know all the guitar major scales after just a few moments study!

It's not so difficult but then to be honest if you want to on learn how to play the guitar you are going to have to know a bit more than just the major scale.
