Teen Party Idea: Guitars and Musical Notes

Ranked #611 in Holidays & Celebrations, #10,743 overall

Need a fun idea for a boy's teen birthday party? Try guitars and musical notes!

Need a party idea for a teen boy? How about a guitar theme mixed with musical notes? Combine musical note paper products, lights, and banner with a guitar balloon or pinata and add a guitar shaped birthday cake for a cool teen party!

My grandson loves to play the electric guitar and said he wanted a rock 'n roll party, but not a 50's theme, for his 16th birthday party. He'd had a 50's party the year before, so didn't want that again. We decided to use a musical note and guitar theme. This idea turned out really cool! It's hard to find any guitar theme party supplies unless they are related to a 50s theme, but musical notes are pretty generic and you can add a guitar cake, balloon, and/or guitar pinata to supplement and put the focus on guitars. If your teen plays a different instrument, you could use that instead of the guitar. The same ideas will work for any instrument (piano, saxaphone, drums), or you could use only the musical notes. I'll show you what we did, plus offer some other suggestions for your own cool teen birthday party.

Happy 16th Birthday Scott!

a word about Scott...

Scott is my first grandchild! (I now have 2 more: Lacey, 14 and Douglas, 6) It's hard to believe he's 16 years old now! When Scott was about 9 years old he wanted a guitar for his birthday. Of course, Grandma got him one! He didn't do much with it then, but never lost his desire to learn to play. A few years later he took bass guitar lessons in Middle School. That year he asked for an electric guitar for Christmas. When he got that, he taught himself to play it. He did so well, he was rewarded with a much nicer electric guitar the following Christmas. He loves to play and does so well! He even writes his own songs. He's put a lot of hard work and effort into his music! I'm very proud of him!!

PS. This year (2012) Scott is 18 years old and graduating for high school! He still loves music and will be studying in that field at college in the fall.

The Guitar Cake was the hit of the party!

Guitar Birthday Cake

made by Ashley Schnarr

Scott is lucky enough to have a cousin, Ashley, who makes birthday cakes and she's very good at it! She's only 17 years old, but has her own cake decorating business, Ashleys Creative Cakes! She made the guitar cake for Scott's party using a guitar shaped cake pan and fondant icing. She also made cupcakes with music note picks (see below)! She made the picks herself using royal icing. You could actually eat them!

This is the cake pan that Ashley used to make Scott's cake. You can also make your own, with this Wilton Guitar Cake Pan. This pan requires one box of cake mix. Ashley used a fondant icing, but you can also use regular icing to decorate this cake.

Musical Notes Table Decorations

Decorate with musical theme paper goods...

For the table, my daughter, Vicky, started with a musical note tablecover. She also used musical note theme dessert plates and napkins. This design has many colors and you can mix and match it with a color of your choice. She used black plastic lunch plates, turquiose lunch napkins, and black plastic cups. The cultery included black and turquiose forks and spoons. Vicky added a musical note centerpiece and later (after the food was cleared) the guitar cake was the center of attention!

Guitar Theme Party Supplies

Rock Star design...

These Rock Star, guitar theme party supplies are also a great choice for a musical theme party. These weren't available when we did our party, but I like them just as well. It depends on whether you want to have more of a "music note" theme or a "guitar theme" for your party. You can also purchase these at PartyPantry.com.

Vicky decorated with a Happy Birthday banner, musical note danglers, musical note centerpiece, and a guitar balloon. You could also add a musical note balloon, lights, banner, and/or a musical note scene setter. Most of these items are available at PartyPantry.com, others she found locally.

Guitar Balloon

play that guitar Scott...

This guitar balloon is really cool! And, it has musical notes all over it (although I didn't realize that until it arrived...you can't see them in the picture), so it was really in keeping with the party theme! We purchased the guitar balloon at PartyPantry.com, along with the musical note plates and napkins, and had it blown up at the local Kroger store. It was a nice decoration for the party.

Party Game Idea...

A fun party game for any age that can also double as a decoration is a pinata. This guitar pinata would be perfect for your guitar theme party. You can purchase the guitar pinata at PartyPantry.com. They also have the pinata bat, blindfold, and pinata filler.

Party Favor Idea!

Flashing Guitar Necklace

This flashing LED guitar necklace is a great favor idea for a guitar theme birthday party! It's cool enough for even teen guys to wear. There were different aged children, both boys and girls, at our party, and these were suitable for everyone. Notice the guys are all wearing them in the picture below.

Activity Ideas for a Teen Party

What to do at a boy's teen birthday party? Good question! These guys mostly just entertained themselves by talking and playing video games. There was a paddle boat available and they went out on that and had lots of fun. They were having so much fun, we were sure it was going to capsize, but it didn't.

At this age, they're a little beyond organized games, so don't worry about that! Here are some other ideas:

1. Since this is a musical theme party, you could invite anyone that plays an instrument to bring it along and play at the party. Or, they could play a song together.

2. Another idea would be karaoke.

3. You could also have dancing, if girls are also invited. :-)
