Thumbpick or Not Thumbpick

i was recently at a music store to grab some new picks and strings and tuners and was amazed at the range of products they now offer. so i came back inspired and started doing some research on the guitar picks. it was fascinating to learn how technology has been incorporated into the music accessories and we have benefited from this advancement!

the materials that are used to make picks now are varied to cater to your specific need. a thicker pick would allow for a stronger attack on the strings and give off a brighter sound. it would tend to wear off faster as well, depending on your playing style (this is based on the assumption that rock players attack their strings harder with a much faster frequency than a blues guitarist would!). i personally prefer to use the nylon picks as they are durable against the metal strings and they vary in thickness. the thin nylon strings are very gentle on the strings, giving off a mellow and softer sound. the thicker nylon strings would give off a louder fuller sound and depending on the thickness of your choice and the strength of your touch.

i am also a big fan of the thumbpick due to the influence of Tommy Emmanuel. the fingerpicking style and passion of Tommy has influenced me in a profound way and after listening to his music i was sold out! i got myself many thumbpicks and experimented with fingerpicking and the different touches of the thumbpick on the strings. the thumbpick is generally thicker than most picks so it might take a while to get used to the response from the strings. it was easy getting used to having the pick "stuck" to my thumb all the time (actually i love the fact that my pick never leaves my thumb!) and as time passed i picked up the technique of fingerpicking, as you will see in the videos below.

is there a right pick to pick with? perhaps that is the wrong issue to pick on (i apologize for the pun!) but instead we should ask: what is YOUR favorite pick to pick with?

enjoy this pick-a-licious lens!

God bless you! =)

Nice lens! I pick with a bass. So does Paul Mcartney and many others. Tyson Ritter of the All American Rejects uses a pick and Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue!

I use a blue chip thumb pick. It's a great pick that gets a good tone easily.
