What is Guitar Slide?

Guitar Slide, also known as "bottleneck" is one of guitar techniques, which is played by swiping a tool made from pipe / bottle to the guitar strings.

The basic idea is...
You play a note and then move the slider (bottleneck) up and down on your guitar strings at a fret board. And the result is you get a unique guitar sound.

Your tone is sounded, and movement continued smoothly.

The Most Important Thing

Slides can be considered as "your finger".
Slide "your fingers" and frets help as a visual guide while you play all your notes by ear.
Guitar Slide Set - 25mm Chrome Steel - Finger and Knuckle Slides SL-12

One of the most important thing that you need to place the Guitar Slide directly over the fret bar to produce a note that you need. Placing the slide between the frets where you usually use to put your fingers will make the note flat or sharp and of course, out of tune.

Shubb Axys Reversible Guitar Slide

Play slide technique it is need very high accuracy.
For a clear tone, we must play it exactly on the above fret bar, then get used to using vibrato-a classical style. Sliding "slide" from right to left, it is useful while looking for the perfect tone during we play it, because it is hard things to obtain distinguished tone pitch if we are using slides.
Then we have to play vibrato..
Same case, like playing the violin, that there is no fret.
In generally, you're used the slide in your 3rd finger and the 1st and 2nd finger it is serves as a damper.
So just note that we have slide that read, while other strings muted.

Open tuning

Mostly, guitar slide technique using open tuning because open strings have a lot of advantages. Rhythm section is more broadly, also it will be closer and more easier to get notes during improvising rather than with Standard tuning. Easier is in the meaning of position not as complex as standard tuning, although clearly we need an adjustment.

Example, open E tuning;

  • String (6) E in the standard on E string
  • String (5) A in the standard was changed to B (up 1 octave)
  • String (4) D in the standard was changed to E (up 1 octave)
  • String (3) G in the standard was changed to G # (up by 1 / 2 octave)
  • String (2) fixed.
  • String (1) fixed.

With that tuning when we pick the loss strings, directly sound E Chord.

Damping

Great Bottleneck Blues Lessons - Slide Guitar DVD - TAB

Damping is prevent unwanted strings went rings.
It is the hard part, but it is important for the slide guitar technique.
This technique is played by either bringing the pick into the string you just played, causing it to be dampened, or by letting the thumb (or other finger) to come in contact with the string.

For the whole damping, keeping the heel of your hand placed on a string picking, light, somewhere near the bridge.

Do we need a pick?

Peaceland Guitar Ring Glass Guitar Ring Slide - 3/4

Did you choose to use the Guitar Pick?
the advantages of using Picks is that you probably know how, and therefore convenient for you, and also attack from the plastic on metal is loud and clear.
However, if you are not careful in Pick the strings can cause unwanted noise

Without a Pick, strings tend to have a warm tone and will allow for maximum control.
downside is you may have to spend time learning a new approach to the right-hand.
