Guitar Strumming Technique #1

A Cool Way of Strumming Using a Chop (you'll see in the video...)

This is a way of strumming with the plectrum which will make your playing sound much more interesting. When people first learn guitar, usually they just strum downwards. That's ok for a start, but after a while, you'll find that that starts to sound quite boring.

So here's a more interesting strumming technique that will make it sound a lot more alive. This strumming pattern is:

  1. down stroke,
  2. an up stroke,
  3. a chop and
  4. an up stroke

Guitar Strumming Technique #2

The Funk Strum

This is a very common funk strum that is applicable in a lot of today's songs. The most important thing you need to understand is that most funk rhythms are derived from the 16th note. That means that each beat is divided into 4.

So in each beat you have:

  1. down stroke,
  2. up stroke,
  3. down stroke and
  4. up stroke.

The first thing you have to learn is how to do funk strumming with a mute beat and then start accenting the first strokes in each beat.

Guitar Strumming Technique #3:

The Triplets Are a Fun Way of Strumming

This strumming technique is a way to add some variation and it also gives your strumming a lot more volume. It is something that kind of comes from the flamenco music and is used in classical guitar as well.

Instead of just strumming downwards, this one goes:

  1. up with the thumb,
  2. down with the ring finger,
  3. down with the index finger and
  4. up with the thumb

You can also make it sound like a drum roll and use it at the end of a song.
