Cruising guitar tabs to build a list of songs

As we gain some expertise on the guitar we find ourselves browsing lists of guitar tabs on the internet looking for songs we can play for our audiences
Trying to get together a repertoire when you are just starting out as a guitar player can be difficult. We usually start with our own choice in music but even the most egocentric performer knows that some kind of compromise with the musical taste of the general population will be necessary. So do we doggedly refuse to play "Tears In Heaven" because Woody Guthrie would not have approved of the sentimentality or are we going to lighten up and give our audience something they can enjoy? Start your search for guitar tab enlightenment with a visit to your local music store or online merchant for anthologies of easy guitar tabs. You can find titles like "Popular Songs for Acoustic Guitar" or "100 Greatest Songs Of Country Music".

Finding the crowd pleasers in your guitar tabs

You will begin to come across the same songs over and over as you go through your guitar tablature

These songs will be your short list of crowd pleasers, and they will probably be kind of old. Maybe even nineteen forties or fifties kind of old. Another thing you might notice is there are some songs that audiences like to sing along to. This might be uncomfortable for you if you are not an audience participation kind of guy. So do not learn too many songs that require you to yell, "Everybody now!!" or "Just the girls this time!". Likewise if you play solo acoustic guitar and have a voice like Johnny Cash you might want to stay away from Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love". But do not ignore songs you enjoy just because they might not seem immediately doable. Remember Jose Feliciano's reworking of The Doors' "Light My Fire" became the definitive version of the song and Eric Clapton's unplugged "Layla" was a surprise hit.

The most important letter in "repertoire" is "you"

Your basic skills as a guitar player and singer will help you through any unfortunate song choices

People pay to see artists who are better at performing than they are. Which is where playing material that you enjoy comes in. If you are playing a song that is an obvious crowd pleaser but you personally think it blows chunks you give attention to the part the audience likes and you play it with a degree of competence. Give the song what it needs so it becomes your vehicle for attracting the audience's attention. That is why you do not bellow, "Hello darkness my old friend" or shirk on the enthusiasm when you sing the line, "Welcome to the Hotel California".

Guitar Tab on Wikipedia

Tablature (or Tabulature) is a form of musical notation, which tells players where to place their fingers on a particular instrument rather than which pitches to play.

Tablature is mostly (but not exclusively) seen for fretted stringed instruments, in which context it is usually called tab for short (except for lute tablature). It is frequently used for the guitar, bass, lute, archlute, theorbo, angélique, mandora, gallichon, and vihuela, but in principle it can be used for any fretted instrument, including ukulele, mandolin, banjo, and viola da gamba, as well as many free reed aerophones such as the harmonica. While today tablature is commonly used in notating rock and pop music, it is often seen in folk music, and was in fact common during Renaissance and Baroque eras. (In the context of guitar tab, standard musical notation is usually called 'staff notation' — even though tab is also written on a staff — or just 'notation').

Three types of organ tablature were also used in Europe: German, Spanish and Italian. There are several types of ocarina tabulature.ocarina tabulature

Harp tablature was used in Spain and Wales.

An alternate usage of the word "tab" is common on the internet, where it refers to conventional chord symbols (for harmony), or note names (for melody).
