The Art of Listening and Playing

One of my favorite of all time songs is "Guitar & Video Games" by Sunny Day Real Estate. It discusses the nature of men to go out looking for adventure, comparing the ambitions and character flaws of a sailor to that of a young man finding escape in guitar and video games. I've always felt that it's an incredibly profound connection. Herman Melville begins his Moby Dick with, "Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off - then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me." Sunny Day Real Estate equates this sentiment, the need to escape to another world with Guitar and Video Games, which have always been mine escapes. So, this lens is about my favorite escapes over the years. Most of them are video games that I used to play, but it's also about songs that I used to play on guitar and the indie bands I would listen to unceasingly.

Sega Genesis vs. SNES

Why I chose what...

Back in the day, before the days of free online strategy games, the question wasn't Playstation or Xbox, it was Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo. Now, I didn't chose (my parents did when they bought it for me for Christmas) but Sega Genesis was always my favorite gaming system. I absolutely loved Sega games and hated SNES games. I don't know if it was because SNES focused so much on one on one fighting games but I just always preferred Sega. They seemed to have better rpgs too, which I know now wasn't truly the case.

Fender Guitars

Everyone loves a Fender...

When I was young, I grew up with my dad as a musician. He would always play guitar and sing songs around me and when I finally got the nerve to ditch my Barney toys, my dad bought me an electric guitar for Christmas. At some point I ditched that and picked up a bass guitar but after awhile, I found my way back to electric guitar. A couple of a years ago, when I was just getting out of high school, I decided to buy my first guitar on my own. It was a fender and ever since, I've been addicted to them. I blame cool indie bands and Explosions in the Sky...

Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time

The best game ever...

Before I had a chance to dive into the world of 2-D role playing adventure games, the makers of Zelda created the end all be all of rpg gaming. The Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time. Not much needs to be said about this game, it simply is the quintessential role playing game. I spent a lot of time playing this game.

The Classics

What I used to love to play...

A long time ago, right around the time of Windows 95, my dad gave me this CD-ROM of Classic arcade games. It was right around this time that we had just gotten AOL and the whole world of the internet was opening up. It started with those classic games like Tank and Asteroids on the CD-ROM but after a while I became addicted to playing free online games on Candyland and all kinds of free gaming websites. Oh the classics.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Taking the hat and whip seriously...

When I was about seven years old, my favorite game was Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade for Sega Genesis. The game was the first puzzle based game that really taught me to think about my environment and try different things to move forward. I used to love the game, I would put on my Indiana Jones hat, grab my toy bullwhip and play for hours.

Red Alert

The greatest war strategy game ever...

There was a long period of my life where Command and Conquer's Red Alert dominated my life. It was my first and only war strategy game based upon World War II and the conflict between the Allies and the Soviet Union. It was amazing. No words I could ever give could give it justice. So I'll let youtube...

Modest Mouse

The best band ever...

Just before I went to high school, I started my obsession with Modest Mouse. I can't remember if it was 7th or 8th grade but I first herd them on some rollerblading video with the song Edit the Sad Parts and I was hooked. I spent my entire adolescence loving what they were doing and trying to recreate it to the best of my abilities on a guitar. After listening to them I got into a mess of indie bands and the rest was history ... is history ... will be history?

Built to Spill

The second band to come about in my life...

After Modest Mouse came a couple of dinky little indie bands and then finally, Built to Spill. The grand pumba. Built to Spill is this group of nasty melody driven indie rockers that spend most of their time writing the most disgusting but amazing songs. I love them, as the years have progressed, I've fallen in love with their albums more and more.
