Smaller Guitars for Smaller Hands

Hi, my name is Mary Dixon and I am a horse rider and trainer, and a WANNA BE guitar player.

I have spent so much time on learning guitar - AND if I had only known 30 years ago that not all guitar sizes on standard - the regular guitars are HUGE for me - can't hold them well and can't wrap fingers to the frets. Looked up and googled all over the place on what to do - alas, instructors say you just have ot put in more effort in strengthening your hands and you'll get it. NOT !!! And, I don't want to spend that much time doing what others do easily.

So, a new friend who is a pro guitar player mentioned they make such a thing as a 3/4 guitar - I couldn't believe it. So, I went online to investigate this and the reviews of those guitars. OMG - they are out there - and it has changed my life completely.

FYI - the photo below will give you an idea of the size comparison of the normal size and smaller size guitar - the sound is terrific in my book, especially the Taylor and the Martin.

No Musical Talent Have I .....

by Mary Dixon

I have ZERO musical talent - whether it be singing or using musical instruments.
BUT, I have always been incredibly jealous and envious of those that do - I would love to be like them - it is so natural to them and seemingly effortless.

BUT, alas, my guitar playing is starting to come to fruition - because I have a guitar that FITS ME ! I never knew there were various sizes since not a single soul had ever told me.

My guitar is the smaller little Martin guitar - I love it - great tone and hello, I can do chords with it without getting carpal tunnel. Are you kidding me ??? I am pretty darn happy about this.

I had originally intended to go for a cheaper one - which Yamaha does have - and it sounds nice - but, then compared to the baby Taylor and the Martin, I definitely preferred their sound - simply because it made me sound better.

I ended up buying the Martin Guitar - the "action" was closer - the distance of the string from the frets - and the wood and workmanship are lovely.

Regardless - the TRAVELING or 3/4 GUITAR is just great for small bodies and small hands. I am crazy about it.

Talk about trying, talk about frustration ...

by Mary Dixon

I have tried for years and years to play guitar - they were just too unwieldy and clumsy for me - sliding on my lap all over the place - and then the frets. Well - it is a wonder that early arthritis didn't develop because of the way I had to crook and twist my wrist and stretch my fat, chubby, short fingers. Are you kidding me?
But, try I did !
Took professional guitar lessons for several years and diligently practiced - it never got any easier.
So, then I though I would try the banjo - only because the neck was so much slimmer, and, to my surprise, the chords were much easier since most songs were in G chord which is an open - hello, no fretting !
But, alas, I still wanted to play guitar - and would occasionally pick up my old guitar and recall very quickly why I went to the banjo.
Then, I found out there is such an animal as a "traveling" or 3/4 guitar - who knew ??? - no one, and I mean no one, ever told me. I just assumed that all guitars were a standard size.
No one at any - and there were many - music stores I went to, nor my instructors, ever told me there was such a thing.
Oh - all those years wasted. Like in almost 30 years.

So, I am here to tell you - get a SMALL good quality guitar like any of those listed above. You will thank me and you will thank yourself.
Best of luck.
