Guitarlincs - home of free guitar music

Looking for free guitar lessons and free guitar music? Take a look at my guitar teaching website, it might help and this page shows you where to find free guitar sheet music. On Guitarlincs you will find free music for guitar in pdf and MP3 format. These are materials that I use with my own students and share.

I am telling you about the site quite simply to share it further afield. Before you look for good songs to learn on guitar you should check out some guitar chord basics For many people it is easy to learn guitar and my website Guitarlincs can get you started for free.

It is not expensive to buy Beginner guitars and it need not be expensive to learn the basics. My site may well help you!

Let's start at the very beginning....

A very good place to start ;)

The pages featured here are for children and complete beginners to learn guitar . Their purpose is to teach the basics of single note playing and reading music. If they do not apply to you because they are too easy or because they are not rock, please feel free to move on to later sections!

Guitarlincs - For Absolute Beginners

This page provides resources and guidance for beginner guitar and bass players and their tutors. Musical notation is emphasised, there are lots of backtracks you can use on line and links to pdf music and to free music I have uploaded to www.sibeliusmusic.com.

To print music from the Sibelius site you will need Scorch which is a safe active X application. It allows you to download and print on paper. It does not allow you to print pdf copies via Acrobat Distiller or similar programmes. This is to protect the copyrights of composers and arrangers on the sibelius site. If you would rather not do this, then use the pdf files where provided and by all means use the backtracks.

Free Guitar Music - Guitar Group Pieces

Here you will find a set of simple group arrangements. Many of these are in pdf format. You could play each part along with the pdf on my site or print them off to play with friends. Teachers might find these a useful beginners resource.

So, what's the catch? None - you can use all these arrangements with pleasure. My hope is that you enjoy them firstly, but secondly, and quite honestly, if you do you might just consider buying one of my books to try some more of my folk song or carol arrangements. And if you don't want to see more? Well, that is fine too! Just have some fun!

Why guitarlincs?

Guitar, Lincolnshire - what's in a name?

guitar guru general

The name comes from links to music I have arranged myself as an experienced guitar teacher, composer and arranger. I am based in the County of Lincolnshire and that this is a site to learn guitar and bass. Hence I bought the domain name www.guitarlincs.com which reflects all these.

This site is different from most others. It does not contain TABs or file sharing. I believe in respecting the copyright of great bands and purchasing their books and CDs. The graphics, compositions and arrangements of music you will find on guitarlincs are all my own copyright and written for instruction purposes. Nor do you have to subscribe to use the music. So, I hope you will read on, maybe visit the site itself. Thank you!

Useful pages on guitarlincs for the electric guitar player

Skill based instruction for electric guitar improvers

I will be gradually adding a series of links in this module. Basically, this is to help identify particular skill areas on the website for those who want to learn guitar but who would rather not browse through stuff they find too easy, too difficult or stylistically irrelevant.

Moveable chords for intermediate electric guitar.

You need chords to rock. Every moveable chord you learn is worth twelve open chords if you also learn the names. Sometimes that familiar shape you already know involves a little too much fretboard jumping - here you will find alternatives that work all over the fretboard!

The aim of this page?

Everything you need to know about power chords, barre chords and other moveable shapes. Starting with the three (yes, there are three!) best known regular power chord shapes and incorporating useful fretboard charts to identify chords, this page moves through moveable 4 string major and minor, full barre chord major and minor, major 7th, minor 7th and dominant 7th shapes. A bonus is, these are the regular shapes used in RGT exams to grade 4 level. A useful reference for rhythm players who want moveable shapes, alternative shapes, or simply just to know what they are actually playing!

What is guitarlincs about?

Understanding notation does matter....

If you are serious about playing the guitar there comes a point where you have to admit understanding music and having fun are NOT mutually exclusive. Ask Steve Vai or John Petrucci! I play compose and arrange rock, jazz and classical for the guitar and this lens reflects that. Even so, you can learn guitar - easy!

I started the website a few months ago for my own students and also to help children, beginners and improvers learn guitar and to read simple music. The first few pages are for young beginners and struggling readers, later pages are for electric players to develop fretboard knowledge. I drew all charts myself too!

The site grows from requests students and visitors make. I hope you will find it worthwhile and return again. Keep posted for news of more fingerstyle guitar arrangements in time for Christmas. Todays offering on the Christmas tunes page is a solo arrangement of the Huron Carol. Thank you for looking!

Learn guitar songs and learn guitar chords

Free Chord Library for Beginners and Acoustic Guitar

Many beginners fail to learn guitar chords. If you want to learn guitar songs, the chords are most important thing at the start! The open chords are the meat and two veg that many songs are built around. Ever heard of the three chord trick? I can't say that produces the most interesting arrangements or songs but it is a starting point. Many hard rock songs start with an acoustic open chord section too for balance. Metallica like this trick and Guns and Roses have been known to use it too!

Guitarlincs - Free Guitar Music - Just Open Chords....

On this page you will see lots of open chord shapes which you are welcome to save and print out with credit to the site. Please don't copy to other websites though, because that is bandwidth theft and bandwidth is not infinite. Also, if I revise the shapes for readability or neatness (as I do on occasion) you will get big red x's all over the page!

These are the most common guitar chords, they are represented in RGT Initial, grade 1 and grade 2. Learn them with note names and you can inpress your examiner! They are all open chords which means they are suitable for beginners and I frequently add to them. There are some non-exam "oddities" and if you are serious you will have your own RGT books and know which chords these are. The sus2 and sus4 chords are examples. They really brighten your playing and give some songs their trademark sound (Summer of 69 is one well known example).

Classical guitarists should also learn chords. You might not strum them very often unless you also play contemporary styles or flamenco but 95% of the classical guitar repertoire contains recognizable everyday chords. If you can see them in the music your sight reading will benefit enormously!

What guitarlincs is not about

Not a TAB site....

Guitarlincs is not about TABs. Many young people learn guitar tabs. You can get those anywhere, some good, some bad, some awful and most of them pirated. I won't endorse piracy, so will not share TABs here. Although to learn guitar tabs is useful, many players who learn only from TAB don't understand theory, notation or the fretboard. Sooner or later this becomes a huge disadvantage.

Guitarlincs aims to help!

Guitarlincs is not a guitar tricks site, there are plenty of those. Usually they offer a nice free taster but to learn anything significant you have to pay to subscibe to the site as well. You can't see what is on offer until you have paid. The job of my site is to help with that very neglected side of guitar playing - understanding notation and the fretboard. Music is presented to be easy to read, like this:

The Hag With The Money

Solos for the Fingerstyle Guitarist

Free Easy Solos for Fingerstyle Guitar

These are arrangements I have done myself. on the first link, they are pretty easy and on the second they are regular classical guitar repertoire. I plan to add to all the pages on guitarlincs but it is a hobby, not my main job, so is not at this point an exhaustive list.

These pieces in pdf format are absolutely free for the individual to use in performance and teaching. I ask only three things; that you respect the copyright, acknowledge it, share the website with friends and students and consider a visit to the links page or my sibelius store at some point.

I think it is as I've found it helpful to have some knowledge of music notes. But I realise a lot of people can play by ear and don't need the background

I know people who play by ear and don't know musical knowledge. However, I think if one is looking to go professional, it is necessary. Like you said earlier though, knowledge can be imparted in a fun way!

Just like any craft, knowledge of the tools and interoperability of all components needed to achieve the correct outcome ... are necessary.

If I want to build a car that drives - I need to know how all the parts work together and have the tools necessary to connect all the parts to achieve that outcome.

I don't think musical knowledge is absolutely necessary but I do think it is advantageous. I think the Nashville Numbering System is something that every Guitarist as well as musician should know and use.
