I've been a guitar player for longer than I care to remember, over 20 years.  What I'm hoping to do on this page is to help fellow guitarists like yourself, avoid the mistakes that slowed my progress as a young player. So how do you get from where you are now, to being able to play like a top pro ?  Well, of course you have to practice, there's no way around that if you want to be a good player.  But, what I want to focus on today is improving your sense of pitch and learning to play songs, solos and riffs by ear.

Learning single note lines and melodies

Start with a small section of music and break it down

If you are trying to learn a complex or difficult piece of music, you need to start with a short phrase, maybe three or four notes. By determining something as simple as a note being higher or lower than the previous one, you can start your journey to playing by ear. Let me mention one thing before going any further. The importance of being in tune. A good electronic tuner can make your life as a guitarist alot less frustrating. It's important early on to recognize what an in tune guitar should sound like. This isn't meant as any kind of put down, it's just that you won't gain the full benefits of your hard work and practice if you are not in tune. Enough said , tuning rant over!

What about solos and riffs that are just flying by really, really fast? Well, lucky for you present day players it's 2007 and we have a piece of software genius like this. RiffMasterPro
This software tool can be downloaded in minutes right to your computer desktop. A couple of RiffMasterPros most useful features include, being able to slow down any guitar part without changing the pitch of the recording. Tunes can be loaded from MP3's or CD's. My favorite function allows the player to adjust the key of the recording to match his or her tuning. So, if you're figuring out a Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray part that is in a lower tuning, you can instantly put the recording into standard tuning. What a time saver! One word of caution, this thing is really addictive, you'll be copying songs like crazy and improving your ear without even realizing it. CLICK HERE

Guitar Chords and Intervals

Learning to hear harmony

Alright, hopefully you have made some attempts at figuring out some simple melodies or solos. Don't worry if you find this to be very difficult at first. I promise your ear and your guitar playing will be much improved after applying some basic ear training techniques.

First, play a major chord. It dosen't really matter which one , pick one you feel comfortable with for right now. Listen to the tone color and quality of the chord. It should sound bright, maybe even happy sounding. Try to come up with your own discription for the major sound. Then try the same thing with a minor chord. E minor is always a good one, and it's quite easy to play. Notice minor has a sadder, more somber quality to it.

Next, try to think of songs you know that sound either major or minor, try to listen for either a major or minor chord. At this point , don't be overly concerned with knowing the exact chord name by ear, say being able to tell Em from Am, or Cm from C#m . For right now we just want to know is it a major chord or a minor. A great way to practice this is to have a guitar player friend play only major and minor chords, while you try to name them accordingly. Remember, don't do to much ear training at one time, your results will be much better that way, and if you want to really speed up the learning process be sure to check out what I use to learn tunes and solos all the time, RiffMasterPro.

RiffMasterPro... problem solved...

Give yourself the playing edge

I recently received an email from Larry telling me how he solved
his troubles learning some of his favorite licks with this tool
called 'Riff Master Pro'.
RiffMasterPro

He told me the stash of his favorite cd's had some of his all time
classic riffs on there. And since he and his buddies were planning
a jam session later that week, he wanted to get the chance to play
and show something that they all really loved.

His troubles were:

*He couldn't tell which notes were being played on the guitar.

*The playing speed was too fast, so he couldn't differentiate one
note from the other.

*Often, the lick was finished just as he started to play.

*He had difficulty finding where to put his fingers and the timing
seemed out of this world.

*He found it hard to distinguish if there was a certain guitar
playing pattern to the riff.

Larry was keen on playing and sounding like a pro, but he had no
way of knowing how to get there until he heard about 'Riff Master
Pro'.

I mentioned Larry to one of my colleagues and he suggested the
'Riff Master Pro' software to me. It's a new technology that
enables people to learn the skills to play any lick and riff they
desire!

'Riff Master Pro' comes with all the information and instructions
to play the licks and riffs of any guitar song in your collection.

Some of the features that 'Riff Master Pro' has include:

*Riff lick and mastering tools
*Self training of guitar playing patterns
*Ear training software to develop your note listening and developing
skills.

It's an easy way to learn riffs and licks from your favorite CD
collection.
