Alabama State Flower

Camellia japonica L

The state flower of Alabama is the Camellia japonica L. Not without history, the official flower wasn't always this lovely. In the 1920s the Alabama state flower was the Goldenrod, but was changed in 1959 because Alabama ladies did not relish the idea of a "weed" being the emblem of the state. So the elegant Camellia was decided upon, given its beauty and prevalence in Southern gardens. In 1999, since there are so many different kinds of camellias, the state legislature decided to be more exact, giving the Camellia japonica L. the honor of being Official State Flower.
