Travel to Artsy Gulfport

I love visiting Gulfport, a small beach town close to St. Petersburg, Florida. The city hosts community events, like bi-monthly art shows (with their local artists), Springfest, 4th of July celebrations, Gecko Fest, Christmas celebration with a lighted yacht parade, and more.

It's a liberal town that embraces all its diversified residents. Gulfport is home to a huge art community, Stetson University, families, and singles. Everyone is welcomed.

Enjoy this mini-tour until you travel to Gulfport yourself.

Gulfport is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area, the 19th largest MSA in the country.

The town was originally named Disston City in 1884 when Hamilton Disston purchased land here. The United States Postal Service would not recognize the name as it conflicted with a town in Hillsborough County. Instead, it was named Bonifacio. In 1890, the town name was changed to Veteran City. Finally, in 1910, the name officially changed to Gulfport.Three Names Shape One. St. Petersburg Times. 2001-07-01. Retrieved on 2009-03-18.

Gulfport is distinguished by its high concentration of artisans inspired by the intense light and tropical scenery, enhanced by the swaying palms. A celebration the first Friday and third Saturday of each month called "Art Walk" attracts locals and tourists. Many street performers, artists and craftspeople show up to create a relaxed cultured atmosphere in the warm balmy evening breezes coming off the beach at the end of the street. Tuesdays are market days in the Gulfport Waterfront district showcasing fresh produce, crafts, and local entertainment. Every fourth Friday of the month Gulfport Goes Green in a monthly Street Faire and expo focused on Green and Healthy Living. An all ages event with free admission and offers produce, crafstman, artisians, a clothing swap, electronics and computer recycling, book swap, live entertainment, and interactive information and demonstrations.

The Catherine A. Hickman Theater of Gulfport is located near the beach and is a venue for live theatrical performances. Teams assemble nearby for beach volleyball, while others enjoy picnics with tots on park swings.

The Gulfport Casino Ballroom also located waterfront is one of the main event venues in the city. The host dance events of Swing, Salsa, Argentine Tango, and Ballroom 5 days a week with a large turnout from all across the Tampa area. The venue also is available for rent to the public and popular for weddings, company parties and functions, and holiday parties. The ballroom features a 5000 square foot authentic 1930's style dance floor.

Stetson University Law School, founded in 1900, is located in Gulfport (having moved there in 1954 from its original location in DeLand).

A free trolley runs on Friday and Saturday evenings to stop at the restaurants, clubs and shops, mostly concentrated on Beach Blvd. and Shore Blvd. The city is still a sleepy beach town but is gaining interest for its culinary and arts scene. Gulfport City Song

Words by Gail Biron

Do you know its Gulfport?
(sung to the tune of "Do you hear what I hear?")

Watch the boat parade passing by
Do you know its Gulfport (echo)
Clymer Park's lights reach the sky
Do you know its Gulfport (echo)

It's Family
Sharing with our friends
Where the warmth and Joy Never ends
Where the warmth and Joy Never ends

Spending holidays without snow
Do you know its Gulfport (echo)
Beach Boulevard still gleams with its glow
Do you know its Gulfport (echo)
The shops, the lights
Shine with spirit cheer
Aren't you glad that you all live here
Aren't you glad that you all live here

We're the Gateway to the Gulf, you can see
Do you know its Gulfport (echo)
Boca Ciega leads to the Sea
Do you know its Gulfport (echo)
That why we live
In such and awesome place
We feel the sunshine warm on our face
The sunshine warm on our face

There's no place that we'd rather be
Do you know its Gulfport (echo)
Cobblestone streets and mighty trees
Do you know its Gulfport (echo)
It's Family
Sharing with our friends
Where the warmth and Joy Never ends

Bobby & The Rockets - One of Gulfport's Favorite Bands

We Love Gulfport's Fourth of July Celebration

The Fun

Our family always goes to Gulfport's 4th of July celebration. An all day event, it starts with a fishing tournament and sand sculpture competition in the early morning. A children's pagent, for boys and girls up to age 12, is held in the casino. Some events require pre-registration.

Daytime events include face painting, with lots of vendors displaying handmade art, food, beads, holiday beads or hats, and much more.

The Treasure

Around 6 p.m., everyone lines the main street to watch the parade. Floats have included the mayor of Gulfport, the Gabber (the oldest family-run local paper), exotic cats, hot rods and motorcycles, dancers, school bands, scout troops, retired military, and more from local businesses.

Artsy and quirky are clearly part of Gulfport's charm, as evidenced by floats for healthy living, recycling, belly-dancing, unicyclists, Red-Hat society, and dog club. A family-friendly parade, the band plays and introduces each float.

Spectators' claps and waves are rewarded with beads and candy (and sometimes, business cards, fresh fruit, and water bottles too!)

The Light Show

Fireworks start at 9 p.m., from a barge close to the Pier. In recent years, the Pier's been closed in preparation of the fireworks. Grab your foldable chairs and stake a piece of paradise to watch the fireworks.

We usually claim a small sidewalk close to the beach and watch the fireworks right over our heads. Spectacular!

Most of the day's events are free. With so much to do and see, everyone has a great time. Gulfport certainly beats the bigger city 4th of July celebrations with fun for everyone.

Fourth of July Fashionable

Most everyone comes dressed in their favorite 4th of July clothes. I love seeing all the outfits - from wacky to wonderful. It's usually hot, sometimes rainy, so choose accordingly.
