The solution to Gulp Alive's leaky container
Intro to Berkley's Gulp Alive
Here's a quick intro in case you are unfamiliar with this great product.
It's softbait in a bait bucket! Because Berkley's super-realistic, biodegradable Gulp! Alive baits actually ''live'' in a high-octane Gulp! solution, they absorb up to 20% more attractant. That's 20% more scent, more taste, more action and more reason for fish to snap them up! Each super-charged Gulp Alive bait disperses its potent scent like a blood trail in the water, and when the fish-catching is over, you can simply put the bait back in the bucket to recharge for another day!The Berkley Gulp! Alive Baits are sold by net weight and not by count. A pint of 3'' Gulp! Alive Minnows will have approximately 36 baits, and a pint of the 4'' Gulp! Alive Minnows will have approximately 22 baits.
The Problem: Poor Package Design
Leaky lid and flimsy handle that just gets in the way.
Don't get me wrong here. I'm a huge fan of the Gulp Alive line of products by Berkley. Berkley's Gulp Alive is one of the most innovative and effective fishing products on the market today. The artificial baits are stored in the super-effective Gulp Alive fish attractant solution and the baits constantly marinate in this proven fish attractant until you are ready to put them on your hook. The baits are durable and are good for catching several fish each. And when you're done, if the bait isn't too torn up from catching all those fish, just throw it back in the bucket to recharge for next time. This product performs as well as, or better than, live bait in many situations. And its advantage over live bait is that you don't have to keep it alive. Whether you're fishing fresh water for bass, musky, or walleye, or fishing saltwater for redfish or speckled trout, there is a Gulp! Alive! bait to suit your needs. Read the product reviews on the web and you will see that this new product is already highly regarded by many anglers. In short: I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!!Now that my praise and addoration for this product are out of the way, its time to address a known problem with the product. THE CONTAINER LEAKS. Period. End of story. To be such a wonderfully effective product, Berkley obviously did not spend a lot of time on the design of the packaging. The bucket that the bait comes in looks nice sitting on the shelf in the tackle shop. It has a sturdy looking green lid and a handy handle. Under the lid is a foil seal that must be removed before you can get to the bait inside the bucket. BUT BE WARNED: once this foil seal is removed, you cannot achieve a liquid-tight seal when you screw the green lid back onto the bucket. Trust me, the lid WILL LEAK.
Another issue with the way the product is packaged is that handy little handle on the bucket. Well, as it turns out, it isn't as "handy" as one would think. When you are carrying the bucket by the handle, the liquid solution inside tends to slosh around as one would expect. When this happens, the bucket tips to one side and then the other around the handle's pivot points. This is fine if you haven't yet broken the seal under the lid. But once you've opened the seal, the Gulp Alive solution will leak out from under the green lid as it sloshes around. This solution smells great to fish, but smells terrible to humans. TRUST ME ON THIS! Also, when you go to store the Gulp Alive bucket in your boat or tackle bag, that handle takes up too much room and just gets in the way.
If you took my advice in the first paragraph and read the product reviews on sites like Bass Pro Shop and Cabella's, then you undoubtedly read many reviews praising the product but condemning the leaky packaging.
The Solution: OXO Good Grips POP Storage Containers
These handy sealable kitchen containers are the perfect solution to the leaky lid.
I can't take credit for discovering this great product. My wife actually suggested it to me after she heard me complaining about how my Gulp Alive buckets leaked. The solution is a simple yet very effective sealable kitchen storage container. The best one I have found is the OXO Good Grips POP storage container. The .3 quart size is perfect for the pint sized Gulp Alive bucket. These Oxo Good Grips POP storage containers have a button in the center of the lid. Push the button down to seal the container. Push it again to pop it up and unseal the container. When the container is sealed, IT IS SEALED.....LIQUID TIGHT! These containers are perfect for storing your Gulp Alive bait. Once you have broken the seal under the lid of your Gulp Alive bucket, just pour the contents into one of these containers, put the lid on, and push the button down to lock it down to form a perfect no-leak seal.
Like I said, the .3 quart sized Oxo containers are perfectly sized to hold the contents of the smaller 1-pint Gulp Alive bucket. And the great thing is that these small square containers have a flat lid when the button is pushed and sealed so they are easily stackable. And they don't have that goofy handle to get in your way. I can fit several of these containers into a small tackle bag two by two and stacked two high. And did I mention they are LEAKPROOF?!?!?!
I like the .3 quart container for my pint of Gulp Alive shrimp

- I don't think gulp has yet to make any containers that are leak proof, I have at least three of those containers and it sure beats having that smelly stuff in the bottom of my tacklbox. Anyone that is serous about fishing and has a healthy collection
freshwater lishing lures and baits would do well to invest in these handy little containers.

- Great idea. Too bad I didn't read this before the entire bucket leaked in my car. By the time I found this out it had been baking in the trunk in 40 Celsius weather and soaked my Gortex, life jacket and soft sided tackle boxes...
