The Gundam Metaseries
Ranked #2,595 in Entertainment, #32,279 overall
The Gundam Universe
Love it or hate it, the Gundam metaseries is one of the most famous production of the anime world. Like Star War in the West, Gundam has a large and loyal fanbase (though it must be stated that internal disputes between Gundam fans, especially fans of different G series/universes, are not rare. Here is a nice musing about the Gundam fandom).
Despite all its flaw, Gundam has pretty much defined the genre of giant robots (it is certainly not the first, but it has created many conventions as well as clichés) and has become a pop-culture icon.
The Gundam metaseries is representative of, and often identified with the genre mecha (giant robot shows). Everything starts in 1980 when director Yoshiyuki Tomino and his staff made the very first Mobile Suit Gundam Series. The rest, as the saying goes, is history.

In the World of Gundam
All Gundam series are about war and war alone. So the items below are all about weapons and soldiers. Please note that although War is the main theme of Gundam, Peace is ever the most desirable thing in the heart of the characters.:D
- Timeline: the setting of the stories. Gundam series often have their own timeline i.e. they are in alternate worlds (with the exception of the newest series Gundam 00 which takes place in A.D. 2307). The timeline is relevant to Gundam fans because it indicates the style, not to mention the story, of the series. "Old schoolers" i.e. fans of the original series and its sequels are often referred to as U.C. (Universal Century) fans while younger fans are A.C. (After Colony) or C.E. (Cosmic Era) fans (This is just personal observation though).
- Battle ground: Earth, Space and the Colonies (In Gundam universe, humans migrate into space but they don't live on other planets. They MAKE their habitats in space themselves, which are called Colonies). The basic setting of every Gundam series is human on Earth vs human in Space (aliens are never a part of Gundam universe).
- Mobile Suits: the most important military units in the Gundam Universe. They are humanoid, human piloted and can operate in both Earth and Space environment. The most famous units of the Mobile Suits are the Gundams. However, there are also well-known non-Gundam units such as the Zakus of the original series.
- Gundam: the elite of the Mobile Suits. The Gundam(s) is/are often the newest/breakthrough model in the context of each show. They are always piloted by the protagonists (hence the name Gundam is associated to the whole metaseries).
- Other equipments: battleships, mobile armors, space fighters and tanks. The battleships have the more prominent part in the shows because they simply are the "garage" of the mobile suits. More seriously, they are where the captains, the real souls of the wars, preside over the battlefields. Some battleships are "legendary" among Gundam fans such as the White Base (of the original series), the Argama (of the Zeta Gundam series) or more recently the Archangel (of the Gundam SEED series).
- New Type: special people who have psychic power, especially those who were born and bred in space. This concept is unique to Gundam series of the Universal Century timeline. The (roughly) equivalence of New Type in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED is Coordinator, people whose gene is biologically engineered and have migrated to space.
- Military ranking: Gundam traditionally uses the ranking of Japanese navy (fan source).
Meet the Protagonists.
They are all teenage boys (Gundam is targeted toward male teenagers). They look cool (that depends on taste though). And most importantly, their skills with the Gundam are top-notch. They are the protagonists of the Gundam show!
-
Amuro Ray - Mobile Suit Gundam (the original series - UC)

-
Kamille Bidan - Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (Sequel to the previous one - UC)

-
Judau Ashta - Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (Sequel to the sequel - UC)

-
Garrod Ran - After War Gundam X (AW)

-
Heero Yui - New Mobile Report Gundam W (Gundam Wing) (AC)

-
Loran Cehack - Turn A Gundam (CC)

-
Kira Yamato - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (CE)

-
Shinn Asuka - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (CE)

I did not include the protagonist for SEED Destiny because (1) I don't like this series, (2) trying to determine the protagonist of this series has provoked a lot of flames and I don't want to remember those either. But on second thought, I do sympathise with Shinn and it's not his fault that the show he appears in has so many problems. -
Setsuna F. Seiei - Mobile Suit Gundam OO (AD)

The "Masked Man"s
or "Char Clones", if you want the fandom's jargon
One of the interesting thing about the Gundam metaseries is that the antagonists are often more popular or at least equal to the protagonists. The antagonist of the original series, Char Aznable, wears a signature mask. This detail is paid homage to in almost every Gundam series and is associated to the main antagonist (hence the term the "Masked Man"). The antagonists in the Gundam universe are not necessarily the main rival of the protagonists though they often directly fight the final battles. They are rather the "main bosses" who have an ambitious (and sinister, depending on point of view) schemes. Thus they are "adult" as oppose to our teenage main players.
-
Char Aznable - Original series

-
Paptismus Scirocco - Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam

-
Haman Karn - Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ

-
Zechs Merquis - Gundam Wing

-
Rau Le Creuset - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED

-
Gilbert Durandal - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny

He doesn't actually wear a mask but fulfills the role of the primary antagonist whose plot the "good" side has to spoil. The actual mask-wearing one is a different story altogether (and one of the reason why there are so many problems in the series).
Mobile Suit Guidebook
a.k.a Characteristics of a typical Gundam series
Disclaimer: I am not the author of this guidebook. This is something I found while surfing on some Gundam forums. It is much more fun to introduce about Gundam this way than in a serious manner. Here we go.Chapter 1: Basics
1. This booklet is for Mobile Suit pilots newbies. Mobile Armor, tanks, fighter and heli pilots should not follow this, the author is not responsible for your death.
2. This booklet should only be a reference if you are experienced or an ACE.
3. The author is not responsible for any negative outcomes from reading this booklet
4. This booklet is confidential--it should not be distributed among non-military personals.
5. This booklet is not-for-sale.
Chapter 2: Routines
6. Remember the code, color and especially where you last parked your Mobile Suit, or else you won't be able to find your machine during times of emergency.
7. In narrow places, keep your hand/legs on controllers. If you really need to free up a hand, free one only--you don't want your Mobile Suit to ram into a wall.
8. No cooking in the cockpit
9. When piloting in crowded area, watch your footing. Those who stepped on their superior are either in jail or in grave.
10. Do not enter areas when it says 'MS NO STEP', even if it's in enemy base, unless they randomly paint them everywhere.
11. When parking your Mobile Suit, park it properly without making funny poses--unless you want to pick a fight with the maintenance staff.
12. Don't piss off the maintenance staff--they only need to unscrew a bolt to mess up your life.
13. Unless specified, before leaving your Mobile Suit, make sure the engine and power source is OFF, unless you want to be the first idiot to be trampled by your own Mobile Suit.
14. When leaving your cockpit, mind your head.
15. No altering the appearance of your Mobile Suit, and especially no slogans, posters, notices, commercials or your girlfriend's picture--unless you want enforcers/enemy shots to come looking for you.
16. Practice rounds cannot scratch your Mobile Suit, but they can still squash you, so no matter how hot it is, keep your cockpit door CLOSED.
17. Do not bring your girlfriend into the cockpit, unless she's from the maintenance staff.
18. No taking walks in your Mobile Suit, it's not cool
Chapter 3: Combat
19. When launching, make sure there's no obstacles in your way.
20. When launching, it is unnecessary to say things like 'XXX, attack/launching/charge!', but it is necessary to check your system
21. Even if it is useless, wear your helmet.
22. When launching, do not tease popular female ACEs, mechanics or communicators, unless she's your girlfriend. And as a note, female captains/Communicators are not included--you are no newbie if you have such courage
23. You were not, are not, and will not be the MVP on the battlefield, so don't get cocky.
24. Hiding among large squads of Mobile Suit will not increase your chance of survival, instead, enemies tend to focus fire on Mobile Suit clusters.
25. Make sure you know the capability of your Mobile Suit, especially if you're piloting one of the mass production type; if you are piloting a Zaku but think you are a Gundam pilot, make sure you have written your will.
26. Keep an eye on the following units: those who lurks in the corner/long range snipers/sneaky assassin squadrons/mothership/Mobile Armor. You won't regret it when they start shooting.
27. Your enemy are always better than you, remember.
28. You stand in the way of your queen if you would like to, but be sure to make way for weapon shots e.g. Beam/Laser/Missiles.
29. Never fight the main characters, there's half a chance you will get promoted, but only 1 out of a thousand gets promoted alive.
30. If your opponent is an Mobile Armor, don't toy with them. It's usually the other way round.
31. Don't stand out, especially when you are a squad leader
32. Support fire never arrive on time.
33. You are not a New Type/coordinator/super human, even if you are.
34. Save up on ammo. You're either a genius or a complete idiot if you run out of ammo/battary when the battle ends.
35. The best pilots are usually teenagers operating custom machines. Friend or foe, stay away from them. It helps.
36. Luck is expandable. That means, lucky events eventually runs out. If you managed to escape from heavy artillery fire for 3 times, you probably won't for the 4th time. Main casts who never run out of luck are an exception.
37. Supplies are never sufficient, that's for everyone. So always keep your Mobile Suit fully charged and full of ammo before missions. DO NOT play computer games with your Mobile Suit PC.
38. Some special weapons need several components to be functional, so even though your weapon has ran out of ammo/energy, don't throw them away.
39. Do not wander in front of your mothership--you won't get credits for dying from friendly fire.
40. When returning from mission, unless otherwise specified, either the ship/cargo immediately i.e. No fooling around and acting silly in the radio--half of those in history are punished, and the other half are shot down, friends or enemies.
41. No screaming in corridors, and no singing if you can't.
42. Don't believe in safety devices in your Mobile Suits--if they can protect you well, there is no need for the army to recruit more soldiers. Train hard.
Chapter 4: Extras
43. This booklet is only for reducing chances for newbies to mess up, but it does not guarentee safety.
44. The author is not responsible for any outcome.
45. This booklet is non-official, so do not mix it up in your lecture notes.
46. No reading this booklet when piloting.
47. No matter what mech you piloting, don't fight the main cast
48. Don't fight the black ops Mobile Suits.
49. Avoid the red Mobile Suit.
50. More importantly, avoid any Mobile Suits in white and blue.
Special note: Don't rely on shields for defense, especially against MAP weapons.
It's a Gundam!
The technical and "cool" part of the shows.
In a way, the Gundams are the most important part of the metaseries. They ignite arm races, turn the tide of the battles and in most of the cases, involve our otherwise-normal-and-peaceful teenage protagonists into the messy world of wars. The Gundams piloted by the protagonists have the signature white and blue colour, which leads to one of the entries in the "guidebook" above.
-
RX-78 Gundam - Original series. Piloted by Amuro Ray, giving him the nickname "the White Devil".

-
RX-178 Gundam Mk-II - Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Piloted by Kamille Bidan

-
MSZ-006 Zeta Gundam - Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Designed and piloted by Kamille Bidan

-
MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam - Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. Piloted by Judau Ashta

-
XXXG-01W0 Wing Gundam Zero - Gundam Wing. Piloted by Heero Yui

The "Grunts"
Cannon fodder? No, they're not.
As the survival guide below shows, the Gundams tend to be the superior weapon technical-wise. But that does not mean that mobile suits of the other side are crap. Moreover, Gundam is the starter of the "Real Robot" trend, meaning that the pilot is as decisive as the mobile suit, much like the case of pilot and plane in real life. So if the pilot is a badass, people will cheer for the so-called "grunts" even more than the Gundam (I'm looking at you, Char).
-
MS-06 Zaku II - Original series. Piloted by Char Aznable

The distinct red paint earns Char the nickname "the Red Comet", referring to his speed. Also spans the meme: anything that is Char custom (and is red) will be three times faster than normal one (or something like that). -
Talgese - New Mobile Report Gundam W. Piloted by Zechs Merquise

-
Over Flag - Mobile Suit Gundam 00. Piloted by Graham Akers

Memorable Gundam Quotes
When I Know I Watch Too Much Gundam
Gundam series often have pretty cool quotes in both humour and meaning. Here are some that impress me the most (That I watch one series several time is also a factor in implanting them in my screwed brain).
-
Grunt pilot: It's Gundam
Signature line of Gundam franchise -
Char Aznable/Quattro Bajeena: This is war, gender is irrelevant
Mobile Suit Z Gundam -
Amuro Ray: On Earth, human soul is imprisoned by gravity
Kamille Bidan: But Earth is where human soul comes from.
Mobile Suit Z Gundam -
Amuro Ray: Making the same mistake over and over! Can't human ever learn?
Mobile Suit Z Gundam -
Trowa Barton: Maybe I should learn from you and sacrifice myself.
Heero Yui: For your information, it hurts like hell.
New Mobile Report Gundam W (a.k.a. Gundam Wing) -
Heero Yui: I'm not a man of peace but my actions help bring peace about.
New Mobile Report Gundam W (a.k.a. Gundam Wing)
The Rivals: Amuro Ray and Char Aznable

Gunpla
Plastic model is all this is about
One of the things defractors like to mention about the Gundam franchise is that it is essentially a toy commercial ever since the original series. The success or failure of an entry is measured by the number of model kits sold, and there are instances where toy making considerations get in the way of story telling. Urban legend has it that the original creator Tomino actively sabotaged his last Universal Century series as a protest against executive meddling. The dependence on toys also highlights the biggest irony (some will say hypocrisy) of Gundam: for a franchise with an anti-war stance, it works hard to show that mobile suits, machines of war, are cool.
Whatever the case, plastic model kits (a.k.a. "gunpla" or "plamo") are an integral part of Gundam. It is a mutually beneficial relationship: the franchise lives on its model kits, and in return gives story, substance, and meaning to those tiny plastic robots. The gunpla builders form a lively community. Unfortunately, I am not involved in this part of the fandom so I do not have a lot to say about it. It is worth mentioning that the creators are well aware about this part of the Gundam fandom and have produced a live action movie about the gunpla builders themselves. You can watch it here
