A lens for guppy fish enthusiasts

I've always been fascinated by guppies since I was young but have never got to rearing them - until recently. I was inspired when I visited a relative and saw his family successfully rear guppies in a ceramic container. I was fascinated to see many young ones swimming around too - proving that fry could survice - albeit at a lower survival rate, perhaps - even when pregnant guppies were not separated from the main community. So I bought 20 of them - to be exact 22 since the pet shop gives me two for free for the 20 I bought. The first batch all died - at the rate of two to three a day. Discouraged, I visited the aquarium shop again and was advised to buy a packet of salt to treat the water. So I acquired another 22 guppies - 10 female and 12 males (again including two complimentary ones!). This time, I seem to have succeeded. Three days later, the guppies are swimming what to me like happily, except for one that is now swimming with difficulty and whose days appear to be numbered. One female has died.
This lens is inspired by my newfound interest, which hopefully will lead it to becoming a hobby as well. I call this lens the Rainbow World of Guppies because I am fascinated by their myriad colors.

The guppy fish - small but beauriful and colorful - is one of the most popular aquarium species in the world.

P/S The photo, which portrays The Rainbow World of Guppies concept, was culled from a Google image search and a note accompanying the image said the image in its original context can be found on a Andrewunknown page.

Guppies and their origins

Guppies, according to the guppies.com website, are native to Trinidad and parts of South America, specifically Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Brazil, Guyana, Netherlands Antilles, Trinidad and Tobago, the US Virgin Islands, and Venezuela.

However, guppies have been introduced to many different countries on all continents, except Antarctica. Sometimes this has occurred accidentally, but most often as a means of mosquito control, the hope being that the guppies would eat the mosquito larvae slowing down the spread of malaria. In many cases, these guppies have had a negative impact on native fish faunas.

Physical attributes of guppies

Guppies have a life span of 2 to 3 years, according to an aquariumfish.net website. The website says males can grow to about 2" including their long tails. Females can grow to be 2.5" long.
According to Wikipedia, guppies exhibit sexual dimorphism. While wild-type females are grey in body colour, males have splashes, spots, or stripes that can be yellow, orange, blue, red, black, or even purple.

My LITTLE discovery

Days after I bought the guppies, I discovered this morning, to my delight, some fry swimming at the surface and hiding among the water plants. But I also discovered a dead male. Based on my Internet research, the female giving birth to the young ones must have been already pregnant when I bought it at the pet fish shop. Whatever, the case, the young ones are a delight to me - in fact one major reason I decided to keep guppies is for this reason.

Why do we want to keep fish?

I found this invaluable snippet on the Qian Hu ornamental fish farm website:
"Modern life in general has become too mechanical and artifical that we are beginning to lose a sense of what living is all about. In order to balance that shortcoming, keeping ornamental fish has emerged as the first choice for being soul-healing, fun and versalite hobby. It has been known for many years now that research has evidence to show that keeping fish can reduce stress, keeping the family together and improving the quality of life. Most important of all, by taking care of the fishes and contributing to the continuance of life itself, this hobby can make us more gracious, generous and compassionate."
