The Fourth Guru of the Sikhs

Guru Ram Das Ji was nominated by Guru Amar Das Ji as the fourth Sikh Guru (Nanak 4) on 30th August 1574.

During his 7 years of Guruship, Guru Ram Das Ji (servant of God), preached extensively the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and contributed even more to the Sikh religion, practice and cause in terms of writing many holy hymns, designing and planning the holy Sikh city of Ramdaspur (Amritsar), constructing the holy pool of Amritsar, creating the ritual of Anand Karaj and also spread the teachings of Sikhism even further by appointing designated Sikh preachers and sending them to several cities in India.

"Birth and caste are of no avail before God. It is deeds which make or 'unmake' a man. To exploit ignorant people with superstitions and to call it religion is a sacrilege against God and man. To worship the infinite, formless and absolute God in the form of a totem, an image or an insignificant or time-bound object of nature, or to wash one's sins not through compassion and self-surrender, but through ablutions; to insist upon special diets, languages and dresses, and fads about what to eat and what not, and to condemn the mass of human beings, including women, to the status of sub-humans and to deny them the reading of the scriptures and even work of every kind is to tear apart man from man. This is not religion, not is it religion to deny the world through which alone man can find his spiritual possibilities."

His Early Life

Guru Ramdas Ji was born on 24th September, 1534 in Lahore. He was given the name Jetha which means "first born".

He was born to Hari Das and Anup Devi of Lahore.

Guru Ramdas Ji married the youngest daughter of Guru Amardas Ji, Bibi Bhani, and had three sons: Prithi Chand, Mahadev and Arjan Dev.

Guru Ram Das Ji and the City of Amritsar

Pool of Nectar

Ramdaspur (the home of Ram Das), was planned and built by Guru Ram Das. The city is now called Amritsar (pool of nectar).

Guru Ramdas, as instructed by Guru Amar Das, began the construction of the second sacred pool. The pool of nectar. Pilgrims came in large numbers to hear the Guru and to help in the excavation work of the tank. The holy tank would be called Amritsar meaning pool of nectar.
