How To Install And Choosing Companies

gutter-installersDoing a home renovation project yourself is a great way to save money, but it may not always be the best solution for quality. Unless you have some experience working on roofs or gutters, hiring professional gutter installers might be the smartest choice for you. Although some methods of gutter systems are easier to handle on your own, there is the danger of working up on a roof or on a ladder, and the intricacies of measuring downslopes, connecting pieces and ensuring that everything is water tight that you need to worry about on your own. Manufacturer's instructions may guide you through most of it, but for complete beginners, paying for contractors is recommended. Everyone has heard horror stories about contractors charging a lot for the job and offering poor quality service though, but there are ways to avoid spending too much. The more prepared you are, the more you can save, so get organized before calling anyone.

Tips to Save Money

1. Be informed. Contractors can easily get more money out of a homeowner who has no idea of his options or price ranges. You need to do your research and know about the different gutter systems, materials, styles and the advantages of each before calling anyone. If you know what to expect then you can't be talked into anything different. You should also look up average supply costs, especially if you are buying your materials from the same company that is doing the installation. Otherwise, look into buying your own supplies to save even more.

2. Establish a budget. Based on your research, you should be able to establish a decently estimated budget that will help you assess wild or reasonable installation estimates. Factor in the supplies and labor so you have an idea of what to expect.

3. Call different companies to have them come to your property and give you a free estimate in person. Some may try to do it over the phone, but they can't have a realistic idea of the job unless they see the house. Once they give you an estimate, have them do it in writing so it can't be changed later.

4. Compare at least 3 or 4 different companies and estimates before choosing one, and don't be shy about it. You don't have to worry about telling a contractor you are shopping around; it may even get them to negotiate lower.

5. Of course be sure to check credentials, warranties, customer feedback and quality of service from all contractors. This won't save you money now, but paying for quality means it will save you money in the long run when the installation is durable and lasts longer.

6. Finally, don't choose a company that is significantly lower in price than all the rest. You want to pick the lowest price within the range of quotes, but someone who is too cheap will probably not have the quality service you want.

With all the gutter installers out there, you can afford to be picky. With proper research and the patience to contact many people, you could end up saving money and having a quality finished product. Let's face it, installing gutters shouldn't be a life threatening decision.
