The Flower: Best of the 1970s Goal Scorers

Who was the greatest hockey player of the 1970s? Between Bobby Orr's dominance in the early years of the decade and Wayne Gretzky's seismic arrival at its end, no star shone as brightly as Guy Lafleur.

Beloved hockey icon and member of the 4-time Stanley Cup winning Montreal Canadiens in the late 1970s, Guy Lafleur typified pure goalscoring. A deft playmaker, Lafleur led the Habs to four straight championships garnering award after award for his phenomenal play.

Lafleur had a knack for scoring timely goals and the ability to bring fans out of their seats when he flew down the wing towards the opposition's net.

Lafleur had the honor of playing after he had been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Lafleur returned to play after a short retirement to continue his career, first with the Quebec Nordiques and then with the New York Rangers.

Here's Lafleur's Rookie Card

1972-73 Topps #79

The picture on the right is Guy Lafleur's Topps rookie card. The catalog value for one of these is currently about $200 in mint condition (a signed card by Lafleur would obviously be worth a lot more). Like many collectors in the 1970s I had a mittful of Lafleur rookie cards but (here comes the old familiar story) my mom threw out my collection when we moved.

Thousands of my Bobby Orr, Ken Dryden, Bobby Clarke, Phil Esposito, Darryl Sittler cards. Gone. (Sorry, I'm getting a little misty describing it). Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe cards from their days in the WHA. Those little comic book inserts and Canada Cup '72 inserts. Everything. But I forgave my mom. I just don't let her forget it :)

Guy Lafleur at a Glance

Guy Damien "The Flower" Lafleur, OC, CQ, (born September 20, 1951, in Thurso, Quebec), is a former professional ice hockey player and is widely regarded as one of the most naturally gifted and popular players ever to play professional ice hockey. Between 1971 and 1991, he played for the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and Quebec Nordiques in an NHL career spanning 17 seasons and five Stanley Cup championships.

Montreal Drafts Lafleur from the Quebec Remparts

Guy Lafleur was almost a California Golden Seal when he was first drafted by the Montreal Canadiens way back in 1971. Apparently the choice was between Lafleur and Marcel Dionne and the Habs took Lafleur. Can you imagine what Dionne could have brought to the party in the late 70s?

Montreal obtained the Seals' first round draft choice and used it to pick the young Quebec Remparts right winger and the rest is hockey history. Lafleur had a slow start in the NHL, but soon flourished to become one of the greatest players in NHL history, winning 5 Stanley Cups and developing into a consistent 50-goal scorer.

Lafleur won just about every award except the Vezina trophy

Lafleur won 5 Stanley Cups, including four in a row with the Montreal Canadiens.

He was a Two-time Hart Trophy winner, for being judged most valuable to his team (2 years in a row). Lafleur also was the leader in points for 3 straight years 1976-78, winning the Art Ross Trophy.

Playoff success also was recognized with Lafleur's winning the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1977, as playoff MVP.

Further recognition came with Lafleur being named to six NHL All-Star teams and his 1988 induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Lafleur's Montreal Canadiens Jersey Retired

On the night of February 10, 1985, Guy Lafleur's number 10 jersey took it's place in the rafters of the old Montreal Forum. Lafleur joined such Habs luminaries as Jacques Plante, Maurice Richard and Howie Morenz as only the 6th Montreal Canadiens player to be honoured with having their jersey retired.
