Believe It Or Not, You Can Help Reduce The Effects Of Climate Change

Aside from purchasing one of my ecology theme t-shirts to help spread the message, there's a lot you can do. Some actions will cost you nothing but a bit of life style change. Some will cost a few dollars, but save you money in the long run. Some are only practical if you have deep pockets.

To begin, understand that global warming is largely caused by our use of fossil fuels, which puts unprecedented amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide and methane are two common green house gases. The way greenhouse gases work is that they tend to block infrared radiation from getting out of our atmosphere into space. Visible light pours in and is absorbed by the earth's surface and nearly everything else on the planet. This influx of energy heats things up. As they heat, they emit infrared radiation. But the infrared doesn't pass as easily through the atmosphere as did the visible. So the net result is planetary heating.

To help reduce this, it would seem that all we collectively have to do is consume less fossil fuel energy, which will begin to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Unfortunately it's not an immediate thing. Carbon dioxide tends to stay in the atmosphere for up to a hundred years.

Scientists are alarmed that global warming seems to be producing effects faster than expected. Since there is a long time lag caused by carbon dioxide remaining in the atmosphere for perhaps hundreds of years, we're now likely too late to bring all of the potential negative effects under control just by cutting our carbon emissions.

Scientists see three basic areas of attack. One way, the way in which we can all participate, is to drastically reduce the amount of greenhouse gases we produce. Another is to see if we can find ways to pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Plants do this already, but perhaps humans can create some more efficient mechanisms. And finally it may be possible to in some way reduce the amount of sunlight penetrating into our atmosphere. A technique being considered is to seed the upper atmosphere with sulfur compounds, which would reflect much of the sunlight back into space.

While scientists consider ways to accomplish approaches two and three, it's time for us citizens to jump aggressively onto solution number one -- reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. If we all back off the rate at which we produce carbon dioxide, we'll be helping enormously, even while our politicians fail to act.

How do we do that? Starting simply:

  • Turn off lights in rooms when you leave them.

  • Turn off televisions when you're not watching them.

  • Turn the thermostat down when you don't need the house as warm (like when you go to bed) or when you're not home.

  • Inflate your cars tires properly and keep the car in tune -- remember it produces carbon dioxide too.

  • Plan shopping trips to reduce the miles traveled.

  • Turn down the thermostat on the water heater to around 120 degrees.

  • Did you notice that all of those suggestions cost little or nothing? And in fact, all will save you money. If your home consumes less gas and electricity, you'll save money. If your car runs more efficiently, you'll also save money.

But there's more you can do for little cost:

Switch your home lighting to Compact Florescent Lamps (CFLs). Those are the little spiral shaped bulbs that fit into a standard socket. There are CFL replacements for most typical household bulbs now, such as regular bulbs, flood lamps, and bulbs plugged into dimmer switches. CFLs do cost more than regular bulbs, so you can phase them in. In the long run they probably don't cost more in that they typically last for years.

What's the advantage of CFLs? They consume about 1/4 of the energy of an incandescent bulb for the same amount of light. Studies show that about 25% of the energy consumed in a home is consumed by the lighting. Dropping that to 1/4 of the current amount -- if everyone does it -- is a huge savings of energy.

There are also solar powered yard lights and motion lights available at reasonable cost. And if your one who enjoys setting up yard lights for the holidays, realize your impact on climate change. You can sill do your decorating responsibly by switching to solar powered Christmas lights. They use solar cells to charge batteries during the day, and run on the batteries at night.

If you don't have any skylights in your home, considering adding them, especially for the interior rooms that are only lit by electricity. An easy addition (I've even put in a few) are those tubular skylights, which use a small dome on the roof to collect light, and a highly reflective tube to deliver the light into a room. The room has what looks like a regular light fixture, but the sun provides all the light. These are in the $150 to $200 range.

If you have the money, the next step is to add a windmill to provide electricity to your home. It's difficult to provide enough electricity for appliances, but a windmill powering a house with CFL lighting would work well. You can also put solar cells on the roof and power most of your home with clean energy, but that cost is is the tens of thousands of dollars.

    What Is Global Warming?

Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) between the start and the end of the 20th century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that most of the observed temperature increase since the middle of the 20th century was caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases resulting from human activity such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation. The IPCC also concludes that variations in natural phenomena such as solar radiation and volcanism produced most of the warming from pre-industrial times to 1950 and had a small cooling effect afterward. These basic conclusions have been endorsed by more than 40 scientific societies and academies of science, including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries.

Climate model projections summarized in the latest IPCC report indicate that the global surface temperature will probably rise a further during the 21st century. The uncertainty in this estimate arises from the use of models with differing sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations and the use of differing estimates of future greenhouse gas emissions. Some other uncertainties include how warming and related changes will vary from region to region around the globe. Most studies focus on the period up to the year 2100. However, warming is expected to continue beyond 2100 even if emissions stop, because of the large heat capacity of the oceans and the long lifetime of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

An increase in global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation, probably including expansion of subtropical deserts. It will likely cause the continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice, and warming will be strongest in the Arctic. Other likely effects include increases in the intensity of extreme weather events, species extinctions, and changes in agricultural yields.

Political and public debate continues regarding global warming, and what actions (if any) to take in response. The available options are mitigation to reduce further emissions; adaptation to reduce the damage caused by warming; and, more speculatively, geoengineering to reverse global warming. Most national governments have signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

    What Is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is energy generated from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and geothermal heat, which are renewable (naturally replenished). In 2006, about 18% of global final energy consumption came from renewables, with 13% coming from traditional biomass, such as wood-burning and 3% from hydroelectricity. New renewables (small hydro, modern biomass, wind, solar, geothermal, and biofuels) accounted for 2.4% and are growing very rapidly.http://www.ren21.net/pdf/RE2007_Global_Status_Report.pdf Global Status Report 2007 The share of renewables in electricity generation is around 18%, with 15% of global electricity coming from hydroelectricity and 3.4% from new renewables.

Wind power is growing at the rate of 30% annually, with a worldwide installed capacity of 121,000 megawatts (MW) in 2008,REN21 (2009). Renewables Global Status Report: 2009 Update p. 9. and is widely used in European countries and the United States. Global wind energy markets continue to boom ? 2006 another record year (PDF). The annual manufacturing output of the photovoltaics industry reached 6,900 MW in 2008,REN21 (2009). The world's largest geothermal power installation is The Geysers in California, with a rated capacity of 750 MW. Brazil has one of the largest renewable energy programs in the world, involving production of ethanol fuel from sugar cane, and ethanol now provides 18% of the country's automotive fuel.America and Brazil Intersect on Ethanol Ethanol fuel is also widely available in the USA.

While most renewable energy projects and production is large-scale, renewable technologies are also suited to small off-grid applications, sometimes in rural and remote areas, where energy is often crucial in human development.World Energy Assessment (2001). Renewable energy technologies, p. 221. Kenya has the world's highest household solar ownership rate with roughly 30,000 small (20?100 watt) solar power systems sold per year. What Solar Power Needs Now Renewable Energy Access, 13 August 2007.

Some renewable energy technologies are criticized for being intermittent or unsightly, yet the renewable energy market continues to grow. Climate change concerns, coupled with high oil prices, peak oil, and increasing government support, are driving increasing renewable energy legislation, incentives and commercialization. United Nations Environment Programme Global Trends in Sustainable Energy Investment 2007: Analysis of Trends and Issues in the Financing of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in OECD and Developing Countries (PDF), p. 3.

Do You Think Global Warming Can't Happen?

    Just Study The Permian Event!

That's right. Rampant global warming has happened before -- and it was devastating.

Granted, that was some 250 million years ago. But it was a whopper event. Some 90% of all living creatures became extinct. One scientist described it well. He said that if you could have been around at the end of the Cretaceous event, the one that killed off the dinosaurs, you'd have still seen life most everywhere. While around 50% of species became extinct, a look around would still have revealed many living creatures.

But if you could have been around shortly after the Permian event, you'd have seen virtually a barren planet. Nearly all living species gone. That's sea and land creatures, even insects.

What caused the Permian extinction? The trigger event, if there was one, may never be known. But a major contributor was a vast sheet of volcanism across Siberia called the Siberian Traps. A large region of Siberia spewed fire and lava for thousands of years.

The results? First of all, such activity for an extended period poured considerable heat directly into the atmosphere. In addition, carbon dioxide and methane (as well as other gases) were also spewed into the atmosphere. The result being that the heat of the volcanoes as well as solar heat were retained by a gigantic greenhouse effect. That alone would likely have caused an extinction of 50% of all living creatures.

But it didn't end there. Great quantities of frozen methane lying at the bottom of the oceans eventually thawed as the waters heated up. This provided another large source of methane that ended up in the atmosphere, further increasing the greenhouse warming.

More heat -- more greenhouse gas. More greenhouse gas -- more heat. A runaway cycle that lead to an earthly disaster.

Now it's happening again. Not from the volcanos, but from human activity. In our insatiable quest for more energy, we humans are the ones saturating the atmosphere with greenhouse gas. And the feedback, the runaway, is just around the corner. The permafrost on the American continent and in Siberia hides immense amounts of trapped organic matter. As the warming continues, the permafrost is thawing, exposing the organic matter. That causes decomposition, and more carbon dioxide and methane.

Same cycle revisited: more heat -- more greenhouse gas. More greenhouse gas -- more heat.

    Are we over-reacting?

I think it's much safer to overreact than ignore the problem. What if we are overreacting? Then we'll spend a few dollars, end up with renewable (that translates to never-ending) energy, new industries, and jobs. If we don't react, our way of life, in fact life itself, may end.
