There's something fascinating about gypsies. I've often thought it would be fun to rent one of those gypsy caravans for a vacation.

This is a real nice lens about genuine Hungarian Gypsy music, as it used to be when my father got a glass too many and listened to the radio in the kitchen while my mom was sulking and cooking.
    Thanks.

i am a hungarian gypsy & we dont know where we came from; the story i was told was that we came from africa, then we went to india or i believe persia ... long story shot we made a deal with the persians that we would help them fight a war for land! that we were never given they lied to us.. after that we went to Romania and then we went to hungry were we mastered the violin... i may be wrong ... we all have are own language so no one can understand what we are saying; i cant even talk to another type of gypsy because are words are 100 percent different.... the gypsies are very good people; whatever we're know for lieing stealing in the past maybe true but we did it for good reasons... we were called nomads made travelers not at are own will; as i mentioned earlier we fought for land that we were never given.. thats all we ever wanted was are own land & flag.... anyways getting back to how we got a bad reputation was ok pictures yourself in there shoes at there time. imagine living your life in fear!!! back then they would run us out of where ever we tried to settle, they would single us out by cutting off are ears, hands and people were aloud to kill us at there own free will! we were never given jobs; we had family tribes that we had to fee so we had to do what we could to survive!!! wouldnt you?? also they would kill are parents and put the children in foster care if they were lucky enough to survive .. thats why ever nationality has a gypsy in it.... people wanted to wipe us off the face of the earth instead everyone has a little gypsy in them lol we got the last laught; we were blessed with wits also thats how we managed to survive all these year & too live on. we will always be a step a head in life & in mind ... of everyone thats not gypsy, because we have to be, we were blessed with that, were all musically talented & the best actors you'll ever meet :)

Princess, nevermind the Persians, you have the whole world. And you are right, maybe not all but many of us have some bits and pieces of Gypsy blood, thank's God for it! But apparently you came from India, I just did research for my own lens on Gypsy music, guess what? There are Gypsies still in India, dressed like Gypsies, singing like Gypsies, dancing like Gypsies. Keep well and take care!

Hi JaguarJulie - this is a great compilation of information. There is a punk band recently popular that relies heavily on gypsy music and I think they're from Romania. Madonna is a big fan of them and they were huge on the London indy scene a few years back. Check them out and let me know what you think, they're called Gogol Bordello, here's their most popular song - its brilliant.

There's an art to putting together perfect lens after perfect lens. And you are an artist. No matter how many of them you do, you manage to infuse each one with something of yourself; to give each one that personal touch. I enjoyed this one as I enjoy all of your lenses. I watched a terrific documentary on the Roma people a few years ago on an international channel. The focus was on their music. The doc followed the evolution of that music by retracing the route the Roma followed over the centuries from India up through North Africa, into Spain and the rest of Europe, recording a performance indigenous to each country along the way. Great stuff!.

The story of the Gypsies is fascinating for sure, and even more fascinating to live among them. I too have several pictures, and a couple CD's. One of my Gypsy friends gave me her journal and told me to keep it, and this gives anyone a real insight into the prejudices as well as the dreams.

Wonderful people. I used to know someone who came from that heritage. People have so many misperceptions. That they survived the Nazis is a testament to their strength! 5*

I wish to be a Squidoo miestro some day so I decided to read the best. Wow!! It must take ages to assemble all of this information. O question if I will ever get this good but will never give up.,

Great lens. I've been to Hungary a few times and I do like being serenaded by the "Gypsy" violinists while eating in restaurants (and in Russian restaurants in Finland and Russia too).

Where in the world would I have found so much information? You have done an outstanding job on this lens!

Had to visit this site, firstly because "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" is my favorite Disney movie, and it handles the plight of the gypsies so beautifully, and secondly to wish you a safe flight to Spain, and a wonderful time.

I had a friend spend some time in Europe last summer and most of it was spent with the gypsies - now she is completely obsessed with their culture! Thanks for the great info and history lesson. I travel a good bit so hopefully I will get to spend time with some of these amazing people one day! p.s. those children are so beautiful...

Great Lens! I love Gypsies and their culture, they have a fascinating and misunderstood background, causing a great prejudges. I was created in Budapest *!* and remember the Gypsies coming into our town (Garmisch) with their wagons, music and food, it is deeply ingrained in me and have painted many paintings of these scenes over the years. I love the multi ethnic music, the Vanner Horses and wagons...A dear friend is a missionary in Slovakia ministering to the Roma, I support her mission through the money I make painting. Thanks for sharing 5*s

I really didn't know much about the Gypsies. Thanks for the interesting look at the Gypsy culture.
  • Evelyn_Saenz May 23, 2008 @ 12:31 pm | delete
The Gypsy Culture is fascinating. If they now only speak the language of the country they live in it sounds like they don't move as often as in the past. Do they own houses, have computers and join the larger society or are they still living a nomadic lifestyle?

Your lens makes me want to learn even more about the Gypsies.

I am Sinti and my family run several Romani organizations. Thank you for trying to pass along accurate information on the Roma. One think you should mention is that the term "Gypsy" was derived from the mistaken thought that Gypsies where from EGYPT which they were not. Also, most Gypsies do not like the term as the consider slanderous especially when used by Gadje our outsiders. For more information go to www.radoc.com . To buy authentic Romani items that support scholarships for Romani go to www.thegypsyconnection.com

    Hi,
Very informative page. As having been raised with a Roma father, I am pleased to see many good sources about the Roma. Some though are stereotypical and will continue to mis-inform about this special and unique culture.
However still, it's a must to read and view.
