The Gypsy Vanner Horse

I had never heard of the Gypsy horse until today. They are truly magnificent animals. These beautiful horses were not recognized as a breed until 1996 when the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society was established. The Vanner breed was the end product of a selective breeding process and only a small number of horses bred by gypsies were from that process. These superb horses have created what is referred to as "Vannermania".

Let's learn more about these gorgeous horses and the farms where they are bred.

Gypsy Vanner Horse Society

Gypsy Vanner HorsesThe history of the Vanner horse begins in 1996 with the establishment of the first registry for the selectively bred horses of the British/Irish Gypsies. The horses that fit the type and characteristics stood out in the crowd of Gypsy-bred horses in the 1990s.

Today the Gypsy Vanner Horse Society focuses on standards to assist breeders and enthusiasts in understanding and being able to recognize the Vanner Horse.

Gypsy Horse Association

Registered Horses

The Gypsy Horse Association is dedicated to preserving the purebred Gypsy Horse and its heritage. They provide a place for horse owner to register Gypsy Crosses and Drums. These horses are bred to create a horse with the lovely temperament of the Gypsy and the agility of a jumper, to preserve the heritage of the traditional Drum, or just to provide a family with an affordable way to share in the beauty of this breed. The value of the Gypsy cross or Drum to their owners is apparent. Cross-breeding for the purpose of creating a horse more suited to a particular discipline will ensure that the purebred Gypsy remains unchanged. All horse breeds have a job they were bred to do. The American Drum Horse is bred to be a heavy riding horse that is calm and gentle even in situations with excessive noise and distraction. They can be traced back as far as the Ottoman Empire.

The TrophyWith warmer weather, there are lots of opportunities to get out and do things with your Gypsy Horse, including going to events to see other Gypsy Horses. Part of the mission of the American Gypsy Horse Breed Association (AGHBA) is to promote the horse, and educate the public about what they can do with this lovely horse.

To encourage Gypsy owners to participate in events, the AGHBA has developed the High Point Performance Trophy (shown here). The trophy is presented to the Gypsy Horse that accumulates the most points in the performance classes during the show, including all riding and driving classes in both Gypsy Horse classes, as well as open classes.
