How To Use an RSS Feed To Update Content on a Lens

This lens will show you an easy way to update content on your lens by using the RSS Feed module. You can update multiple lenses all with one blog post. Great for content that will be changing (such as the YEAR 2008 in your CopyRight sections will change to 2009 soon for example).

Remember: This kind of update will not be detected by Squidoo's Check list for lens rank. So it should not be used as a replacement for freshening up a lens.

It is for LONG Term modules such as the copyright notices, perhaps a Holiday Greeting (you can update the greeting seasonally), or to suggest a new lens to direct your readers to (you might use it to announce your new lenses). I will discuss specific ways I am going to implement this tip and would love for you to add any more ideas you have or new ideas this lens sparks for you.

GypsyOwl Connections - Comments Always WELCOME
This is a Central Guestbook that will feed to all my Squidoo Lenses

This is the new blog to consolidate information and guestbook replies because I have over 100 Squidoo Lenses now and a guestbook on just about every one of them. I read every comment (it is emailed to me)... but, getting to the lens to reply has been a challenge.

So, This Connections Guestbook is a place for everyone to connect. Please continue to leave a comment or feedback for an individual lens on the lens... and also copy it here or leave a message for GypsyOwl or other readers here.

I will be linking this blog by RSS feed to every lens soon. And creating a lens about Feeding Your Lens. (more information soon)."

Seth Godin Said a Tribe...

"needs a shared interest and a way to communicate."

I am creating the GypsyOwl Connections as a central place for us to communicate. I am always delighted to hear from anyone who enjoys my work, I am always delighted to discover your work, and together we make a difference.

An Example of the RSS Feed from my new Guestbook Blog

The heading would say "Be Sure To Visit My Guestbook Blog" or something like that.

The RSS: Add Your Own Feed module

Here are some suggestions about setting up your module.

When you click on 'EDIT' on an RSS:Add Your Own Feed module, you will have the option to answer the following questions. I have made suggestions here.

What URL would you like to pull RSS from? Use the URL that you get when you click on 'View Properties' of your feed. You must subscribe to the feed and then click on 'View Properties' and then copy the URL and paste it here.

How many headlines would you like to show? Choose 1 or as many as you like. If you want only the most recent post to show than typs in 1 here.

Would you like to include an excerpt from each link in the feed?? Everything Available

How frequently should the module be updated? 30 Minutes

Would you like to display HTML in the excerpt? YES

Since the posts are YOURS, you can better display them by choosing 'Everything Available' and 'Yes' to the HTML question.

Save Time -

By using 'Feed Your Lens' techniques for Affiliate Banners and other banners that need updated periodically.

One post and your done.

Squidoo Secrets

How to use the RSS feed to cycle or update affiliate program banners

How often do you receive updates from affiliates? If you have banners on every lens, do you need to edit every one to do the updates? This feed your lens technique will save you a lot of time.

Simply update one post and where ever you have a feed the information will be updated on all of the lenses that are connected to that feed.

Save a lot of time and keep updated (so no wrong links or lost revenue).
The Following Example is a feed from GypsyOwl SBN an affiliate blog I created to get my affiliate banners online

Update Your Stats

Have you earned new awards for your LensMaster Skills, have an award winning lens, have great news about becoming a Giant Squid, Giant Squid 100, or any number of annoucements?

The Feed Your Lens idea is great for a module that will update with just one blog edit. :D

We want to celebrate You!

The Giant Squid Journal - Giant Squid Exemplar Award Posts

This feed is from my Giant Squid Journal blog. I can use it to update information on any lens that I have that is about Lens tips or Squidoo Awards. It is a great way to keep anyone who reads the How To Lenses up to date with the Giant Squid program (I link to the Giant Squid Organizers blog), or great tips I discover.

You might use this idea if you are creating a series of lenses on a particular topic. A bit like a Lensography Blog you could say. I just thought of this as I am writing and decided to create one just for my GIMP Tutorial Lenses. So the RSS feed can be updated on everyone of them everytime I add a Tutorial Lens to my collection.

Use Squidutils.com RSS Feed to Post Your Top 5 Lenses

Let your readers know what your top lenses are (most popular)...

You can use SquidUtils feeds to show the top LR , or The most currently Updated, or even narrow it to just Groups. There are so many ways to use SquidUtils you might want to try them all and see how each option works.

I post RSS for my blogs on relevant lenses, mostly to get traffic to the blogs themselves. It never occured to me to use blogging for updates this way. Thanks for the great tips!

5 stars and a roll to my Squidoo tips lens!
