Personal: Why Hackensack New Jersey is Special to Me
Thank you to lensmaster shoumo for giving me this page
In August of 2011, I received a message from lensmaster "shoumo", pictured below, asking me if I would like to adopt this lens/page about Hackensack because I have several New Jersey lenses. I was so excited about receiving this gift, as Hackensack holds some very special memories for me on a personal level, let me share a few of them with you.I went to college in Teaneck in the early 1970's and worked at the YMCA in Hackensack as part of a work/study program...I was paying my way through college. Later I would work as a Legal Secretary for two different lawyers on two different occasions in Hackensack. Hackensack, being the location of the Bergen County Courthouse (pictured), has many law offices.

Perhaps the greatest memory of all is meeting my husband of 32 years in Hackensack. We met at a get-together I was invited to by a friend, and during our discussion found that we worked one block from each other in downtown Hackensack. About a month later, thanks to a bit of match-making by a mutual friend, we found ourselves in the same place and spent the evening together talking. The next Monday he called me for lunch, then there was a date in New York City...and the rest is history. We met daily for lunch...in Hackensack, and after we married on April 7, 1979, traveled to work together.
So you see, Hackensack, New Jersey is a place that is very special to me, and I am so grateful to my new Lensmaster friend for giving this lens to me. Please visit his lenses/pages on Squidoo if you have a moment, you can get to them by clicking his name under the picture below. Thanks again, Shoumo.

Hamburgers @ White Manna, Hackensack
The Hackensack White Manna Diner is a fast food restaurant located at 358 River Street since 1946. When originally introduced, it was called the "diner of the future" and an "Introduction to Fast Food". One of the things you will learn in these clips is the sales volume.
The first YouTube video is a collage of stills and clips with Marshall Crenshaw's Someday, Someway in the background. I then have a review (by Robb Gill?) this is part of a series of NJ Diners and Drive-ins. How do they make it? The next clip "Anatomy of a Masterpiece" answers the question. If you are still not hungry, we have another review by Nandoism.
USS LING SS297 - World War II Sub
USS Ling patrolled American shores during World War II in response to U-Boat attacks off the coast of the United States. Ling made one Atlantic patrol before the war ended. After being decommissioned in 1946, Ling became part of the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. Ling was reactivated for training in 1960 and donated to the Submarine Memorial Association in 1971. Since January 1973 USS Ling has been displayed in the narrow headwaters of the Hackensack River, and is the official state naval museum for New Jersey.

Borg's Woods
as seen on Weird NJ
Few would believe that over 15 acres of preserved woodlands over a couple of centuries old could exist within a stones throwing distance from the high rises of Prospect Avenue. The best access to Borg's Woods (named for John Borg, the founder of the Bergen Record) is from Fairmount Avenue one block west of Summit Avenue, although natural dirt trails also lead into the woods from Byrne Street in Hackensack and Woodland Avenue in Maywood. Visitors will find a largely unspoiled woodland filled with large trees, wetlands, and diverse wildlife. A trail system exists, but its primary deficiency is two very muddy wetland crossings that deter all but the hardiest of users from walking the trails in a loop fashion through the site. The Main trail is a remnant of a larger trail system which existed before Route 4 and is rumored to be of Native American origin.A story in Weird NJ stated that in these woods was an old house - known as the Mummy House to some - long ago abandoned. As kids during the 70's & 80's, he and his friends heard rumors of ghostly figure at the windows. When they approached the house, someone rattled the doors from inside. You get the picture. The woods had been in the news for an etirely different purpose for a long time. Had it not been for the efforts of Eric Martindale and others with him the woods would have given away to a condominium development project in the mid 1980's by Macromedia, Inc. who owned the woods at that time. Appeals went on for years and after a nine year battle the Bergen County purchased the 14.2 acres in 1994 to set aside as parkland. Due to the lack of a balanced park management approach, measures by the county continue to threaten the fragile ecosystem.
There have been recent (June 2011) reports that a family of coyotes have made the woods their home. If you plan on visiting the woods it would be a good idea to carry something that would make a lot of noise. The idea is to encourage coyotes not to get comfortable around people. It is advisable not to take pets into the woods and not to leave behind any food for these wild animals. If you spot one of these animals use a loud voice, make noise, act with confidence to establish dominance.
