"The thief left it behind,

- Ryokan

Ryokan

Soto Zen Buddhist monk

Ryokan was a Soto Zen Buddhist monk who lived in Niigata Japan. He soon left the monastery, where practice was frequently quite lax, and lived as a hermit until he was very old and had to move into the house of one of his supporters.

Ryokan was famous for his poetry and calligraphy. His poetry is often very simple and inspired by nature. He was a lover of children, and sometimes forgot to go on his alms round to get food because he was playing with the children of the nearby village. Ryokan refused to accept any position as a priest or even as a "poet", which shows his great humility. In the tradition of Zen his quotes and poems show he had a good sense of humour and didn't take himself too seriously. However his poetry also gives illumining insights into the practise of Zen.

Ryokan lived a very simple, pure life, and stories about his kindness and generosity abound. On his deathbed, Ryokan offered the following death poem to the nun nursing him:

"showing their backs
then their fronts
falling maple leafs"

On the Narrow Road: A Journey into Lost Japan

This book was my introduction to Haiku and travel in Japan. Written by an American woman who previously wrote Japanese cookbooks for Americans, she fell in love with the poetry of Basho and decided to follow a pilgrimage that Basho took into northern Japan. So with backpack and a walking stick...she took the narrow road.

Hi Pat,

Great lens on Haiku. I live in Japan and am interested in Haiku and Tanka (57577).

I'd like to recommend the Illustrated Japanese Classics edition of Bassho's The Narrow Road to Oku, translated by Donald Keene, and beautifully produced and illustrated.

BTW I landed on this lens via a link in your Twitter post! Oh, and by coincidence, the security code I have to enter to get this comment posted is "twitlove"!!

Isn't haiku a great enjoyment and outlet? I like both traditional and nontraditional haiku, but on my lens Haiku Mix, I probably write more nontraditional.

Nice job with your lens.
