Made of Memories: An eclectic mix of 75 haikus

Ranked #8,633 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #304,029 overall

Once Upon a Time...

...a teenage girl loved to sit by her window and write poems and short stories in a green notebook. Graduating from high school and entering the rigors of college put a stop to this beloved hobby of hers...for over 10 years.

Then one day, this teenager-turned-young-woman was reminded of those spring and summer days writing and how much she enjoyed putting pen to paper while listening to the raindrops hitting leaves and rooftops outside. Inspired by those memories, she created a challenge for herself: write one haiku poem every day for the next year.

So for four full months, she stuck to her goal every day, even when she felt her muse had abandoned her. But by this time, the fun had fled and she became burned out. A few weeks after she'd written the last poem, she decided to take her 120 haikus and choose only the ones she liked most to compile into a book. This lens features a few poems from that book, Made of Memories...

Shatter

Sound of breaking glass,
loud against my bedroom door.
Wakes me with a jolt.

Little Joyous Ones

Cherub baby smiles
light up my own eyes with joy
and laughter inside.

Tide Time

Ocean, wide and blue,
hums with the incoming tide.
Washes over me.

Expectation

Know I will succeed.
Know I can do anything
I truly believe.

Clean Relief

Shower aftermath:
skin singing delightfully.
The grime washed away.

Peaks Under Dark Skies

Misty mountaintops
reach for the overcast sky,
thirsty and waiting.

Tail Chaser

Energetic ball.
Runs in circles: furry, small.
Catches "prey", stands tall.

Landscape Photo

Camera ready.
The mountain has all day long.
Time for her close-up.

Surveying the Damage

Apocalyptic.
Wooden beams and shredded trees
strewn across the town.

Rainy Day

God's bright light concealed
behind fluffy plumes of gray,
buckets of water.

Slow and Steady

The world in your way?
Steady on, like the tortoise
winning marathons.

Heaven In Song

Melodic voices.
Swelling song fills the abbey
to a crescendo.

Morning Light Show

Please stop lightning, storm.
I need to wash the dishes.
Breakfast is calling.

Yeah, I must admit, that's one of my favorites as well. And it just came out of my head on the first try, no editing needed.

Great Haiku. I wrote a poem a day last year for the year. One month I kind of cheated by writing haiku.

Hi LizMac60! Well, a haiku is still a poem, so I wouldn't think of it as cheating. At least you made it through the whole year, unlike yours truly. But hey, I have no regrets.
