An Introduction To Hailsham

Hailsham is a small market town 7 miles North of the coastal town of Eastbourne, England.

It has a busy shopping area catering for most needs and an active traders market every Friday morning.

It also has many areas for recreation including the lovely tranquil Common Pond and the Cuckoo Trail.

The town has a long history which is very evident as you look around at the various buildings from different periods.

The Town Centre

The Heart of Hailsham

The town centre has most of the shops that you might expect in a busy town.

This area is very busy Monday to Saturday.

However, on Sunday this area is very quiet.

Here are just some of the shops we have in Hailsham:
  • Waitrose
  • Co-op
  • Superdrug
  • Jingles Music
  • Hailsham Cellars
    Our local wine experts
  • Tesco
    Very recently opened
  • Several Charity Shops
  • Several Estate Agents
    Come and live in Hailsham!
  • All of the big banks and building societies

The town is very quiet on Sundays

The Common Pond

A Quiet Retreat

This quiet little spot is all that remains of Hailsham Common which once covered a very large area to the South of the town.

This is a pleasant place to sit and read, have a picnic, chat with friends or feed the ducks.

Hailsham Pavilion Cinema

The cinema was originally opened in 1921.

It closed temporarily in 1965 before coming into use as a Bingo Hall.

Eventually it was closed again and it was left derelict for several years and deteriorated.

In 1993 the "Hailsham Old Pavilion Society" was formed and the cinema is now fully restored and functioning as a cinema and theatre.

The Cuckoo Trail

In 1968 the railway line which served Hailsham was closed.

The trackbed is now a footpath and cycle path which runs through the beautiful countryside from Heathfield to Polegate.

The route is very popular with cyclists and walkers.

Looking forward to learning more about this little town. We vacationed in Eastbourne last year and loved it. Thinking strongly of making a return visit. :)
