The Free Hair Braiding Encyclopidia

On my search to learn new ways to braid my sister's hair it found it difficult to find a variety of different braids all on one site. I had to hunt down different and interesting styles with much difficulty and wished that there couldn only be a webpage that had it all.

This lens includes a variety of different braiding styles as well as different hairstyles for each braid. For each different braid type under the "hairstyles" heading will show different hairstyles you can make using that braid type. All the pictures shown under "hairstyles" will have an instructional video in the respective order.

Happy Braiding!

For english braiding in general you can do it either way; her way (by pulling hair on top and spliting the rest of the hair in half to make three parts) or just split it in three parts normally.

English Braid

How To

The english braid is the most common and easist braid to make; everyone knows this one. Think little school girl easy. The english braid is the basis for all other braids

Part the hair into three parts, wrap the right part (1) of hair over the middle (2), and the left part (3) of hair over, between 1 and 2. Repeat this pattern until you reach the end of the hair.

Think of the basketball 3-man weave.

4-Strand Braid

How To

The 4-strand braid is like a 3D braid.

To make it you first take 4 strands of hair, and label them 1, 2, 3, and 4. Take the 4th strand and bring it over strand 3, then bring it under strand 2, and over strand 1.

THINK: OVER, UNDER, OVER ,UNDER.

Now continue this pattern all the way down your hair. Take a look at the video for more help.

Important!

The "Headband" Braids

There are two main types of headband braids. The Swiss braid and the crown braid. They look very similar but are different. The Swiss braid is made by crossing two braids around the bottom of your neck and pinned to make a "headband". On the otherhand a crown braid is made by French/Dutch braiding around your head.

Swiss Braid

How To

The Swiss Braid is the easier of the two headband braids because it only requires that you know how to do the English braid.

French Braid

How To

The french braid in another popular style, and will need some practice at first.

At the top of your head, at the hairline at your forehead make three pieces of hair, one at the middle of your head and one on each of its adjacent sides. Make a braid pattern once, and to each side add hair and repeat the braid pattern. Continue the patter of pulling in hair and braiding it until there is no more hair to pull in.

At this point continue the braid as an english braid down the rest of your hair.

Dutch Braid/Inside-Out Braid/Reverse Braid

How To

Basically it looks like a braid on top of your hair. The very same instructions as a french braid, but instead of pull the pieces of hair over, you pull them under.

This works the best with crown braids.

Lace Braid

How To

You should learn the french/dutch braid before you move onto this; the lace braid can be a variation of either of those. For the lace braid you star out as you would for a french/dutch braid but instead you only add hair from one side, usually the side adjacent to your hairline.

Some say this is somewhat easier than the french/dutch braid so if you're having trouble with the french/dutch, try this.
In this video the girl finishes her braid with an english braid, but you can continue as long as you want with the lace braid.

First divide the hair into two parts. From one part pick a thin group of hair and drag it to the other part of hair. With the other part of hair pick a thin group of hair and drag it to the first group of hair. Continue this pattern all the way down the hair.
