Hair Color Alternatives

There are plenty of hair color alternatives to blonde, brunette or red hair. You can pretty much have any color hair you want, thanks to the wide selection of colors of dyes, wigs, and extensions available. You can dye it all one bright color, get two-toned hair, or you can literally have rainbow hair like the girl pictured here. Whatever your preferences, this lens/webpage should help you experiment and figure out what colors will work best for you, as well as how to go about getting them.

NOTE: Separate Pink Hair & Red Hair Webapges/ Lenses...

If you find that you enjoy this lens, you might enjoy the Pink Hair & Red Hair lenses below as well...

You will notice throughout this lens/webpage that I'm not really covering pink or red hair on this lens. That's because I have whole lenses dedicated to each one of them already, as you'll see below. If pink or red hair aren't really your thing, ignore this section & proceed...

Alternative Hair Color Wigs

yellow short bob wigIf you aren't sure what color or shade to dye your hair, or you just don't want to even bother with dye at the moment, wigs are a great way to see what looks best on you. Buy or borrow a wig to wear for awhile, so you can get accustomed to how you look with whatever color you choose, as well as whether or not you're comfortable with the attention that color may get you. If you tire of the wig quickly, it's fine, and you can just wear different wigs out & about until you find a color & hairstyle that fits you best.

Check out the wide array of wigs from Amazon below and see what you like...

You can also check out wigs at Hot Topic.com, look at pictures of Cosplay wigs on the Gothic Lolita Wigs Tumblr blog, then view & even purchase a wider array of wigs on the Cosplay Wigs USA website.

Alternative Hair Color Extensions

Rainbow Hair Extensions WeaveIf you want streaks in your hair instead of color all over, or you want to dye your own hair but add length & fullness to it, hair extensions are a great option. It's best to decide what style you want before you start, as you have several options.

If you simply want a streaked look, with whatever color/colors you choose to stand out colorwise but blend in hairwise (so it looks like your own hair), you can get the extensions done professionally, or you can buy clip-in or glue-in hair extensions to do yourself at home.

If you're dying your own hair and getting extensions to fill out your look, you or your hairstylist can dye blonde extensions at the same time that your hair is dyed, so that the extensions and your hair will be the exact same color.

Visit HairResources.net to see the first of 6 steps/pages on the research and process to be aware of when getting hair extensions. It also describes 7 ways to get hair extensions done (which inlcude clip-ons & glue-in extensions).

You can also visit the DIY Rainbow Hair! Tutorial on Buzznet for more detailed tips on how to dye extensions yourself.

Alternative Hair Dye / Color / Colour

Girl With Purple & Silver Hair, Septum Piercing, Cheek Piercings & TattoosIf you are ready to dye your hair whatever color it is you want to dye it, you need to make sure you're going about it the right way. While it's best if a professional hairstylist dyes your hair, you can do it yourself at home.

The best way to dye your hair will depend on two things:

1) How light or dark your own hair is at the moment, and
2) how bright or dark the shade(s)/color(s) is/are that you want to dye your hair.

Angelica Muderotic alternative yellow hair, septum piercing and cheek piercingsFor instance, if you have, say, dark brown or black hair, and you want your hair to come out a bright yellow or orange, you'll need to bleach your hair accordingly. Otherwise, your hair will just come out with dark with a tine of whatever color you put on it. But if you have blonde hair, and you want to dye your hair a dark brown or black, you don't need to bleach your hair.

Where bleaching your hair is concerned, always make sure you wash all the bleach out of your hair. Let it dry (I don't know if it's ok to let it airdry, but I've seen plenty of videos where the bleached hair is blowdried). It needs to dry so that the color will take to your hair better. Apparently it doesn't work as well when the hair is wet.

Lindsay Woods alternative green hairI've heard several things where hair dyes are concerned. A lot of people will use the Manic Panic brand because it's vegan. If you use it according to the directions, it doesn't last much longer than 2 weeks. But leave the dye on your hair for 1 hour- 1 1/2 hours at least (you can leave it on longer than that if you want, since it is conditioner-based), and it will stay much longer than two weeks. I've also heard that mixing Manic Panic colors, as well as using the Manic Panic AMPLIFIED dyes, allows for the color to come out much better on your hair. I have also heard that the Special Effects brand naturally will last much longer (how much longer, I do not know). But there's other dye brands available besides just those Manic Panic & Special Effects.

Girl with blue turquoise teal hair, wearing a Ramones tank top shirtEven having said all that, it's really best to talk with someone who has dyed their hair the same color you want to dye yours (and/or several other colors). They'll be able to give you pointers on what you should & shouldn't do to your hair, before and after you dye it. You can also watch video tutorials online (and watch several of them).

For more tips & techniques on how to dye your hair, click here. You can also check out the YouTube video tutorials (just below this section).

I've also reblogged a few dye tips on my Tumblr blog- one about hair dye jobs in general (with special Manic Panic instructions/tips I previously mentioned) & tips on using Manic Panic hair dye on dark hair.

She knows a lot about dying hair as she's had it several colors, so if you have any questions you'd like to ask her, read her blog FAQs here first, then ask her a question on her Formspring page.

YouTube Video Tutorials on Dying Your Hair Alternative Colors

The "Hair Care Tips & Techniques : How to Dye Hair Wild Colors" video is a very short video tutorial about the effect that bleaching has on hair colors (which is simply that it will come out brighter, so if that's what you want, bleach your hair).

The "TwiggX- How to dye your hair in an extreme colour" video is a tutorial showing a girl bleaching part of her hair, then dying it a bluish-green color (which comes out looking more green once it's dry).

The "Charlavail Hair Dye" video has a good tip about not putting too much conditioner (if any at all) in your hair. She uses too much conditioner, and as you'll see, the color doesn't stick very well on her hair.

I realize the "How to Color (dye) Your Hair like in a Salon, at Home" video isn't of a girl with an alternative hair color. But for those dyeing their hair any one color all over, this video gives good tips about how to do a professional-looking dye job on your hair at home. There's only thing she says in the video that I wouldn't recommend, and that's using left-over color to remove spots on your head that got dyed in the process. It might work with whatever color dye she's using, but with colors like orange & purple and such, it might just end up dying your skin more. I don't know... you can try it if you want, but at your own risk.

While the "Affordable Hair Care Routine + How to Get 'White' Hair" video isn't really a tutorial, the girl in it does explain the process of getting her hair white, as well as all the products she uses to keep her hair in good condition. So if you're after white hair, watch this video.

NOTE: If you know of any videos showing people dying their hair just all one color, preferrably orange, yellow or purple, leave me a message in the guestbook and you can post the link (the html will be stripped out, though, to keep spammers at bay). If you have a video of yourself dying your hair one of these colors, and you explain the process well enough (either verbally or through captions/video text), link to that video on YouTube or Vimeo, and if it's good, I'll add it here. (Another note- DON'T use annoying music & DON'T use music with cuss words in it. Thanks.)

Punk / Scene Hair

Punk culture is likely where the wide array of hair colors originated, as punk culture is all about going against the norm. These colors are also prominent in scene culture. If you just read that last sentence (as well as the title of this module) and said, "I know what punk style is, but what is scene style?" Well, this is the best way I know how to describe it. If you're familiar with "emo", you know that style-wise it's related to punk. So the hairstyles are similar, but emos tend to wear a lot of darker colors. Well, scene is also related to punk , but scene style involves a lot of bright colors instead. Below is a collage (made by me, via Polyvore) with examples of punk-style hairstyles of many different colors.

For more info on scene culture (and to see some actual scene hair photos), visit the lens below.

Very inspiring lens. I love rainbow! Great lens, I really enjoyed the read. Keep up the hard work I love the wigs. Absolutely amazing. :0) Purple. Love it. Nice Lens. I used blue colored wig on my friends pool party last weekend. Glad to see you included Manic Panic and Special Effects in your lens. When it comes to bold, bright colors you can't go wrong with either of them. Their toners are excellent as well. I recently wrote an article about dyeing your hair white. Both product lines have excellent purple toners to aid in the dyeing process. Love these bold and vibrant hair colors. I like Gwen Stefani's pink mane. She totally owns it! Fantastic lens! Hey, I just published my fourth lens called the 3 Shortcuts to Happiness and would love to know what you think of it. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Blessings! Sundae ;-) I would love to dye my hair a really bright pink but I don't think my employer would like it so I have it as bright as I can but it is Ginger lol
