Treatments are available for all types of hair loss, some being more effective than others. These treatments are usually given by medical professionals, since they may often require the dispensing of a prescription or surgery.

There are a few different types of medications available for preventing or slowing hair loss. Minoxidil (also known as Rogaine) is now available without a prescription. It's a great over-the-counter aid that can work for both men and women.

Finasteride (also known as Propecia) is a prescription medication that is available in pill form. It is a DHT blocker than is given only to men.

These medications are slow-acting. It may take up to 6 months before you start seeing a noticeable difference. In some, these medications will only slow down hair loss, but won't grow new hair. This may vary from person to person.

Your hair loss could be caused by a scalp infection. If you have a fungal infection of the scalp, there are anti-fungal shampoos that can help.

It's relatively easy to correct the problem if your hair loss is cause by iron deficiency or other vitamin deficiency. If you've isolated your hair loss problem to this cause, you can simply supplement for a while until your levels become normal again.

Perhaps the most radical hair loss solutions are those which require surgery. Also known as hair restoration, they typically remove hair from one area of the head and transplant it to thinning areas. There are several different types of hair restoration surgeries available. Generally, the more expensive surgeries are the ones that provide the most natural-looking results.

It's often believed that only men experience hair loss, but almost as many women as men will experience it to some degree.

Many women experience hair loss due to age-related issues. Hormonal changes late in life may cause hair production to slow, and hair follicles generally only produce a certain number of hairs throughout a person's life. As a woman ages, it becomes more likely that she will experience some degree of hair loss.
