Why is my Hair Straightener Making my Hair Look Oily?

Be sure that you are not using too much product in your hair as this can make hair look oily when a hair straightener is used after applying product. Also, try using your flat iron on a lower heat setting at the roots of your hair as the higher the heat the more moisture that is being dispersed into your hair. You can go over the ends of your hair at a higher heat setting if need be.

Try using styling products meant for oily hair types as well to help avoid any unwanted shine.

How Much Damage am I Causing by Straightening my Hair?

It depends on a few things.

The type of iron you use and making sure to use a heat protectant before any heat styling.

A Professional Hair Iron will cause less damage as they have features such as true ceramic or titanium plates to help maintain the health of your hair. (see link below for more information on Professional Hair Irons)

A Heat Protectant Styling aid will help protect your hair from heat damage caused by heated styling tools and should be used every time you use a hair straightener, curling iron or blow dryer.

How do I use My New Hair Straightener?

First time Users

Like with everything, practice makes perfect!

Start by practicing with your iron on a low temperature or even shut off so you can get the feel of it and figure out what works best for you in terms of hand placement and so on.

Once you are ready to go ahead and start styling keep a few things in mind to make styling with your new flat iron easier;

-keep an inch or two away from your scalp until you become more comfortable with your hair straightener.

-divide hair into sections before styling, start at the back of your head and work your way around and up through the sections.

-watch how to videos or read how to articles for styling ideas

How do I Add Volume With My Hair Iron?

Adding volume with your flat iron is a simple process. When straightening your hair, instead of just running the iron down your section of hair pull the hair iron up as if you were trying to make your hair stand up straight.

To achieve the look in the photo you would twist the iron when you near the ends of the section of hair. Rotate the direction from section to section.

Why Wont My Hair Stay Straight?

Sometimes you spend all of this time straightening your hair only to have it spring back to it's natural wavy or curly state, how frustrating! Usually this is caused by hot and humid weather although sometimes some of us just have hair that refuses to stay straight.

Here are a few suggestions to help keep your hair straight and smooth after straightening it;

1. Try using the hair iron on a higher temperature setting.

2. Use styling products specifically designed to help keep hair straight.

3. Humidity can be a major part in adding a kink to straightened hair so if you are in a humid climate use products meant to fight humidity such as a shine serum.

4. Blow Dry hair straight before going over it with your flat iron.

5. Use a flexible hold hair spray or a flexible hold styling aid meant for heat styling.

Where do I find Hair Straightening Products?

Products for straightening hair can be found everywhere from salons to drugstores to supermarkets. Depending on your preference, where you buy is up to you. Some brands you find at the local drugstore work just as well as salon products.

If you have hard to manage hair salon quality products may work better for you plus they will most likely have a wider selection of styling products.

It is important that you always use a heat protectant before using a hair straightening iron.
