Hair straightening has been around a lot longer than you might expect. Women have of course had curly hair forever, so how far back does the hair iron go?

The hair straightener was famously made by Marcel Grateau who invented heat tongs which would curl and wave hair. This was the first known "curling iron" and goes back to 1872. Marcel used heated metal rods to straighten hair, and thus the straightener was born.

Interesting story, and of course the straighteners in those days were not nearly as nice as they are now, and the effect probably didn't last more than an hour or so, but that's how the hair straightener was invented.
