The Basics of Hair Care

Centuries ago, herbal hair care was the only way to go. These days, herbal hair care routines have been all but replaced by synthetic, chemical-based products.  While these products might minimize damage, increase shine, highlight colors, and build strength, only foods stimulate the growth of healthy new hair. Though these products have some benefits, nutrition, not chemcials is the basis for healthy hair.

Protein is the key ingredient for healthy hair since hair consists of 97 percent protein.  Good sources of protein include eggs, beans, yeast, nuts, fish, and dairy products. Brewer's yeast is a good source of B vitamins, which assist in protein synthesis. Sugar, on the other hand, destroys B vitamins.

In the event of a hair problem, nutritional deficiencies should be considered. Dry, thin hair, for example, may indicate a need for unsaturated fatty acids, while dandruff may be a call for vitamin A. In general, a well-balanced diet - with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and sufficient protein - will produce healthy, beautiful hair.

Choosing the Right Shampoo for Your Hair

Of all the hundreds of shampoos out there, how do you know which one to choose for your hair?

Start by figuring out your hair type. If your hair is permed then most likely you're seeing a stylist on a regular basis and he or she has suggested a product for you. If your hair is colored you will want a shampoo that will be gentle on the color and not strip it from your hair. Is your hair dry? Oily? Thin or full and coarse?

Herbs and botanicals smell great, but their affect on the hair yet to be proven. Most shampoos and conditioners affect your hair only temporarily by leaving product behind on your hair after you wash it. They really have no long term effect on the condition of your hair at all.

All shampoos clean the hair. All conditioners leave a trace of product on your hair which help keep the cuticle smooth. It doesn't matter if you mix and match products, despite what they say.

From experience, the salon shampoos usually leave my hair feeling cleaner, shinier, and just fresher than the cheaper products I usually have in my home. It's possible to capture that just left the salon feeling by using the more expensive salon products. Too bad we can't find a way to bottle the way your hair looks when it's freshly cut and styled after leaving the salon.

Tame frizzy hair: rub a small amount of coconut oil into your hands and apply to hair. Don't put too much or your hair will look greasy. Don't wash your hair as much to helps with the frizzies. Too much shampooing can strip natural oils from your hair.

Rinse your hair with baking soda and water to get rid of shampoo build-up and styling residue.

Shine up dull hair: Rinse your hair with a juiced lemon mixed with a cup of water to bring life and shine back to dull hair.

Apple cider vinegar mixed with water will give your hair shine and bounce.

Add patchouli to your shampoo if you have oily hair.

Lighten hair: Mix chamomile tea with lemon juice and use as a rinse to lighten hair.

Treat dandruff: add rosemary and/or patchouli essential oils to your shampoo or mix with almond oil as a hair treatment for your scalp.

Fight hair loss: add horseradish oil, cedarwood, clary sage, and/or rosemary oil to your shampoo. Also, Vitamins B, C, F, zinc, iron, copper and protein are essential for hair growth.

Drinking plenty of water and eating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables is probably the best way to achieving healthy hair. What goes into your body is reflective on the outside including your hair.
