Haircuts for Trans men

Ranked #4,851 in Culture & Society, #104,147 overall

It's the stuff on your head.

People have a lot of opinions about hair - especially your hair. If you are a trans man, you've probably been given a lifetime's worth of tips about how to keep yours. The common wisdom suggests that you need to keep my hair short, forever, otherwise you will never pass. Nowadays, however, men commonly wear their hair at many different lengths and in all sorts of styles. Additionally, plenty of women wear their hair short as well. Depending on a short length is no longer a fool-proof way to pass.

That isn't to say that no trans man can benefit from short hair. Some trans guys look better with short hair, and some do pass better with short. The way to judge what your hair should look like is not whether you want to pass, but whether or not the hair will look good on you specifically.

Why long hair is okay.

If you get the chance, I would like you to park yourself in the middle of a thoroughfare. Sit on a park bench where people often pass. Sit near a bathroom (But enough of a distance away to not be creepy) and watch the people going in and out of the men's room. What you see may surprise you. Men of all sorts and sizes go in and out, walking in various ways, and none conforming to any one idea of what a man is. Their hair may be short, long, styled or un.

Long hair is a thing that men wear. In old celtic cultures, long hair was common for men. Look at celtic artwork, which often depicts men with long hair in various knotwork designs. The jury is out on Judeo-Christian ideas about long hair, but images of Jesus often depict him with long hair. Ancient Romans believed that short hair was preferable, a belief which has stuck with European society through the ages. Fashions do change every so often, and in modern times long hair has been acceptable starting with the 1980s.

You may have some concerns with individual people, such as employers or relatives, but rest assured that on the whole, society doesn't deem long hair as female-only.

Types of hair cuts

This website will give you examples of a couple different types of men's hair cuts, from short to medium to long. Take a good hard look at the guys in these pictures. Do they look masculine? Feminine? Does the hair length actually determine how their gender is perceived? Look at the variety of men's hair cuts that are available. While a 1950s barber shop guide might give you a similar and limited range (Caesar cut, crew cut, flat top, etc), nowadays a plethora of men's haircuts is common to be found in magazines and on screen atop the heads of celebrities.

The history of my hair.

My current hair (Note the amazing fashion of a lazy morning robe.) The first haircut that I ever had was extremely short. I asked for my hair to only be a finger's width tall. The results were...not stunning. I was happy, however, because short hair was definitely more masculine than long hair. Instead of looking masculine, however, I simply looked 'butch.' It didn't help me pass.

Once upon a time I also tried out the mullet. I figured that it would let me have long hair, but also keep the hair in front out of my face. I think my mullet looked decent, but other people insisted otherwise. I didn't care about them, though, because I just wanted to have fun with my hair. The mullet was also useful for cosplaying.

Then I tried a shorter more stylish cut, one which I was assured would help me pass more. It didn't help me pass. I was very irritated, not only because I had hoped it would work, but also because I didn't want to keep paying for haircuts. I wanted to grow my hair out long.

Nowadays I am growing my hair out long and also growing some sideburns. (Yay for the power of testosterone!) I am doing this because I want to, not because I think it will help me pass. It may help me pass, though. Who knows? Some people appear more masculine with long hair than they do with short, and some areas are filled with more long-haired cismen than short-haired.

Trans men videos

Once I can get my camera working again, I will add a video or two about hair. For now, please enjoy these other fine videos from the makers of Youtube.

The bottom line

There is so much advice that you can get, but in the end it all depends on how you feel about your hair. Is it comfortable? Does it work for your lifestyle and the activities you do? Do you enjoy the way it looks? If the hair works for you, ignore everyone else and go with it. Your hair belongs to you, so that is the only thing that really matters.
